GMT's Combat Commander

Post by Jeffrey H. »

I'm on the verge of taking the plunge into this one. Does anyone here play it ?

If you're going to list a game nobodys ever heard of you should at least put a link in your post.

I play on VASSL from time to time and get to enjoy head to head on occasion.

I really enjoy the card driven (fate, action and orders) mechanics in CCE which does a very good job of recreating the chaos in inflicted on small units in battle.

Any particulars fell free to fire away

Yeah, they really got something with the cards. It really integrates the cards into normal turn based sequence play well. Plus the graphics are "old person" enabled. Huge hexes for all the counters, no need for stacking. Pretty cool. One of our guys is saying things like "best game design ever". He's no newby either.

I'm a big fan. Plays fast and the cards solve the ASL problem of rules you only use once in a blue moon.

It's a good game, though I'll still recommend Lock 'n Load Band of Heroes if you don't have it yet.

Agreed,

Both must haves for the tactical hex and counter fan. BOH has some of the nicest graphics and rule/game play I’ve seen , nice blend of playability combined with a rule set just complex enough to keeps this interesting.

If I had to choose I think BOH wins , but both worthy of the price of admission.

Both on the same level of complexity and learning curve , the veteran war gamer will be playable in the fist hour
Setup and take down is a breeze and easily stored in the box , hence “ bookcase

It always looked interesting to me. I'm one of the biggest card game fans out there. What's been somewhat difficult for me to assess though is how well the cards actually work in a game such as this. In particular vs say Lock n Load which was mentioned. I can't help but think Lock'n Load would be the better system and that cards belong more in a game which similarly extracts other elements to an equal degree instead of here where at first look it looks more like it was lopped on to add interest and effect. More to the point it seems like it would often yield unrealistic results given the game's scale.

But I am highly biased here so what do I know?

Still I might buy it (Though I'd much rather buy the PC Version of Lock 'N Load were it to materialize soon)..
