Finnish Navy
Väinämöinen ~ Named after the god of chants, songs and poetry in the Kalevala (epic poem), was a Finnish coastal defence ship, the sister ship of the Finnish Navy's flagship Ilmarinen and also the first ship of her class. She was built at the Crichton-Vulcan shipyard in Turku and was launched in 1932. Väinämöinen, as well as Ilmarinen were planned to be mobile coastal fortresses for the defence of the Finnish demilitarized islands at Åland in particular. The two ships were not suited for operations on the open sea. The biggest problems were that the ships were volatile and rolled too much. The minimal depth keel, together with the high conning tower, made the ships' movements slow and wide. It was said that the ships were uncomfortable, but harmless to their crews.

Type: Coastal Defence Ship Class Väinämöinen class Ordered: 1927 Laid down: August, 1929 Launched: December 28, 1932 Commissioned: April 29, 1932 Fate: Scrapped ca 1968 Displacement: 3,900 tons Length: 93,0 m Beam: 16.864 m Draught: 5,0 m Propulsion: Four Diesel-Electric 875kW, Two shafts. 3,500kW (4,800 hp) Speed: 14.5 knots Range: 700 nm (at 15 knots) Complement: 410
Armament: 2 × 2×254 mm Bofors, 4 × 2×105 mm Bofors, 4 × 40 mm Vickers 2-8 × 20 mm Madsens
Ilmarinen (in the game the name is misspelled "Ilnamoinen") ~ was a Finnish Navy Panssarilaiva ("Armored ship"), a coastal defence ship by British classification. Ilmarinen was the flagship of the Navy. It was built at the Crichton-Vulcan shipyard in Turku, Finland, and named after the mythological hero Seppo Ilmarinen, the Eternal Hammerer, blacksmith and inventor in theKalevala (epic poem), is an archetypal artificer from Finnish mythology.

Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen were two of the most concentrated naval artillery units ever built. They were designed by the Dutch company NV Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw, and were optimized for operations in the archipelago areas of the Baltic Sea. Their shallow draft and super-compact design however gave the ships poor performance in open sea.

Coastal defence ships were particularly popular in the Nordic countries. These vessels had typically heavy armament, rather good armor protection, but generally slow speed. The story of this type of ships began in Denmark, Sweden and Norway at the beginning of the 20th century. Their size was around 4,000 tons, main armament 210 or 240 mm, armor corresponding to that of armoured cruisers and speed about 15 to 18 knots. A coastal defence ship was something between a cruiser and a monitor: slower than a cruiser but better armed, faster than a monitor, but with smaller guns. The coastal defence ships had different types, some of them were close to cruisers and others, such as the Finnish ones, were closer to monitors.

These I just did.

Turkish Navy
BB Yavuz ~ Battle Cruiser Yavuz Sultan Selim or Yavuz
Originaly the German SMS (Seiner Majestät Schiff ~ His Majesty's Ship) Goeben. This ship was half of the two ship German Moltke battle cruiser class and the ships had coal-fired turbine engines. On the outbreak of World War I, the Goeben was in the Mediterranean, accompanied by the light cruiser Breslau. Durring her long and adventurous career there she had threatened French troop convoys from North Africa, bombarded Philippeville, and traded shots with the British light cruiser Gloucester. This made her the target of every Allied warship in the Mediterranean. She and the Breslau eventualy made a dash for the Turkish-controlled Dardanelles. Upon reaching Istanbul on August 16, 1914 they were transferred to the Turkish Navy (the transfer was not made permanent until 1918 and most of the German crews remained to man the ships). the Goben was renamed Yavuz Sultan Selim and the Breslau was renamed Midilli.

The Yavuz Sultan Selim and Midilli sailed from the Dardanelles for the Mediterranean on January 20, 1918 to attack shipping between Salonika and Palestine. But while attacking the island of Imbros and sinking the monitors HMS Raglan and HMS M-28 she was attacked by aircraft from a British seaplane carrier and struck several mines (Midilli was sunk by the mines). Because of the damage from the mines she had to be run aground for repairs. Even though she was re-floated on January 26, 1918 this proved to be her last cruise at war. The ship’s name was shortened to just Yavuz in 1936. The powerful ship remained in the Turkish Navy, although she never again put to sea after 1950, gradually she turned into a relic and was finally put up for sale in 1963. When there were no buyers, the ship was placed on display until 1972 when she was scrapped.

Shipyard: Blohm & Voss, Hamburg Laid down: 28 August 1909 Launched: 28 March 1911 Commissioned: 2 July 1912 Decommissioned: 20 December 1960 Fate: Transferred to Ottoman Navy 16 August 1914. Scrapped 1973.
Displacement: 25,000 tons Length: 186.6 m Beam: 30 m Draught: 9.2 m Propulsion: 4 screws, Parsons turbines, 52,000 hp (39 MW) Speed: 28 knots (52 km/h) Range: Complement: 1,053
Armament: 10-11.2 in (284 mm) 50-calibre guns (5x2), 12-5.9 in (150 mm) guns, 12-3.45 in (88 mm) guns, Aircraft: None
CL Medjidieh - or 'Medjidiye'. Means glory or honour, one of the ascriptions of God. Also the name of a coin and a distinction later awarded by Ottoman rulers as the Mecidiye Order. No longer in general use, but spelt 'Mecidiye'. This ship was a protected cruiser of 3500 tons displacement launched in 1903 as the Medjidieh. In April 1915 during the Great War she was mined and sunk in the Black Sea, and was subsequently salvaged, repaired and refitted by the Russian navy and re-launched as the Prut. In 1918 she was seized by the Austro-German navy at Sevastopol and returned to Turkey where she was renamed.

Shipyard: Cramps, Philadelphia Displacement: 3300 tons Length: 225 Beam: 40 Draught: 17.5 Propulsion: Babcock and Wilcox coal boliers Speed: 22 knots Range: 470 miles at 10 knots Complement: 330
Armament: six 5.1 inch Vickers guns; four 3 inch Schneider guns and two machine-guns, Aircraft: None
CL Hamadiye (or 'Hamidieh', ex-'Abdul Hamid', renamed after the 1908 revolution) -
On the night of January 1, 1913 the Hamadiye escaped from the Dardanelles Straits, without being noticed by patrolling destroyers and destroyed the auxiliary light cruiser “Macedonia” anchored in the port of Syros. As it was later known, the main objective of the “Hamadiye" sortie was the execution of a specific mission in Albania. On the morning of February 27, 1913 the light cruiser “Hamidieh” appeared near the Albanian shores and headed to San Giovanni where several Greek troops transport ships were debarking the Serb Army. She attacked the ships and fired a large number of shells causing damages and casualties, especially among the Serbs. The only counteraction was the firing by two mountain guns with which the Serbs had armed the steamship “Trifillia”. That was sufficient for the Turkish cruiser to depart to an unknown destination, without completing her operation. She served as a training ship durring WWII.

Displacement: 3830 tons Length: 368 Beam: 47.5 Draught: 16 Propulsion: 2 sets 4-cylinder triple expansion 2 screws Speed: 16-18 knots Range: 550 miles at 10 knots Complement: 330
Armament: 2-15.2cm/8-11.9cm

Displacement, Dimensions, and Armament are from Janes Fighting Ships WWI and WWII.

Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen both took part in Operation Nordwind on September 13, 1941 in which German forces were to take the Estonian islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. A group of ships were to be used to deceive the Soviets. When returning from the mission, Ilmarinen was hit by mines. Two sea mines had got entangled on the paravane cable; when the ship turned, the mines hit the ship and were set off. The ship sunk in seven minutes. Only 132 men of the crew survived and 271 were lost. The survivors were later known as Ilmarisen uimaseura (Ilmarinen's Swimming Team).

Good thing that, with the generic nature of subs, transports, amphibs & asw units, one can come up with a fairly standard blurb for each (dependent on nationality) and go from there.

We have a guy on the task but I am sure he could use some help, as he does not (to my knowledge) speak croatian nor serbian (i am culturally sensitive enough to not call them one language [:D] ) His name is Dale. PM him!

It would be great to have more hands working on this!

I believe the new partisan HQ units need writeups too: Tito and Zoya. For the other 57 HQs we already have much longer writeups - 4 or 5 paragraphs each.

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..
