PBEM: Bombur(J) vs Spruance(A)

This game was started several months (RL) ago as a Nik Mod 9.1. 2 Day turns and the usual house rules. The Japanese December 7th port attack was made at Pearl Harbor but no BBs were sunk and 5 of the original 8 BBs there have been fully repaired. We made it to May 1942 and the Allies were still holding out in Manila behind level 9 forts so I decided to make an attempt to relieve the Philippines before supply completely ran out. Manila was supplied fairly well by a combination of subs, AK blockade runners and transport AC flying out of Illoilo and Jolo. The Japanese have tightend the noose on Luzon over the past 2 months and AKs can no longer get thru so supply has been dropping precipitously.

General George C. Marshall and the Joint Chiefs of Staff have finally decided, after initially writing off the PI, to excecute a variant of War Plan Orange and have the USN fight their way across the Pacific to resupply and reinforce the Philippines. With the Allied retention of Wake, the axis of advance for WAR PLAN Orange will be shifted northward from the Marshall Islands to the axis Midway/Wake/Marianas/Luzon.

Concurrent with USN operations to fight their way across the Pacific from the east, SEAC will be advancing to the northward from Java up the Makassar Straight to reinforce the PI from the south.

ORDER OF BATTLE

USN: 10 BBs, 5 CVs, 1 CVE
RN: 4 BBS, 3 CVs

7th Division has been prepping at Fort Ord, Ca. for Guam.
1st USMC Division has been prepping at San Francico, Ca. for Tinian.
The 32nd Division was on route to the south Pacific but has been recalled to assault Saipan.
2nd USMC Division was pulled out of Noumea and 58th RCT, 24th RCT, 138th RCT, and 153rd RCT were withdrawn from the central and south Pacific to function as a floating reserve.

SEAC will provide 2 UK Divisions
SW Pac will provide 2 Australian Divisions to the SEAC replenishment effort

SITUATION REPORT: MAY 1942

SE ASIA: Malaya and Singapore were overrun in March 1942. Moulmein and Rangoon were just captured by Japan and the Allies are currently falling back on Mandalay in considerable disorder.

DEI: Sumatra was captured by Japan by March 1942 but their naval losses were too high from Allied air(in Bombur's opinion) so Japan has been very conservative in their preparations for assaulting Java. IJN BBs and CAs based at Palembang have been bombarding Batavia around the clock so an invasion of west Java appears to be imminent. The Allies currently have an assault value of 1200 plus(all Dutch) entrenched behind level 9 forts at Soerabaja. The Allies have approximately 1000 fighters and bombers massed in the SRA and northern Australia so Bombur has been very careful and methodical in his advance.

On Borneo, Brunei has been captured by Japan and Kuching has been under naval bombardment on a regular basis. Sulawesi, Timor and Amboina are all under Allied control.

The ABDA defensive position in the SRA looks like a large head and shoulders formation. The left shoulder is Java, the right shoulder is Timor and Amboina and the head and neck is the Makassar Straight extending up to Allied controlled Jolo and Davao bordered by the Allied controlled east coast of Borneo and Sulawesi.

CENTRAL AND SOUTH PACIFIC:

Japan has captured Rabaul but Port Moresby, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Fiji, Samoa, Canton, Palmyra and Wake are all in Allied control.

PI:

All of Luzon is in Japanese control save for the fortified city of Manila. The Allies currently have an AV of 2500 at Manila behind level 9 forts and the IJA has an AV of 2700 besieging Manila. On Mindanao, Davao is still under Allied control as are the islands of Jolo, Illoilo and Cebu.

Sub recon indicates very low levels of Japanese forces on Guam, Tinian, Saipan and Marcus.

ALLIED INTELLIGENCE ESTIMATES: MAY 1942

Sub recon indicates the presence of 2 combat formations on Guam, one on Tinian, and none on Saipan or Marcus.

Mavis recon AC appear to be flying out of Saipan. With no ground units being spotted there, it is assumed that the Mavis AC are being supported by an unidentfied ship in harbor at Saipan.

Positive ship ID in the south China Sea includes:

BB Mutso
BB Ise
BB Yamashiro
CA Myoko
CA Kumano
CA Suzuya
CA Mogami

A major Allied reinforcement of Port Moresby was met by 6 IJN CVs in April. Over a dozen Allied ships were sunk in the operation. It is assumed that KB is still in port at either Rabaul or Truk.

There are 3 Betty capable airfields in the PI: Cayagan, Aparri and Clark. Other Betty capable airfields bordering the Philippine Sea include Palau, Saipan and Guam. All Betty capable airfields must be neutralized prior to reinforcement of Luzon.

UNITED STATES PACIFIC FLEET
AND PACIFIC OCEAN AREAS
HEADQUARTERS OF THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF

Serial: 034372 15 May 1942

From: Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas

To: Admiral R. A. Spruance, Commander Task Group 58

Subject: WAR PLAN ORANGE: Relief of the Philippines( Revision of WPL-46)

Enclosures: (A) WAR PLAN ORANGE OVERVIEW
(B) OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER
(C) OPERATION SHOESTRING
(D) OPERATION SLAM DUNK

Enclosure A: WAR PLAN ORANGE OVERVIEW

1. General Marshall and the Joint Chiefs of Staff have decided to make a major effort to relieve/ reinforce American/Philippino troops on Luzon.
2. You will command Task Group 58 which will cover the relief of the Philippines.
3. Concurrent with your efforts to reinforce the Philippines from the east, SEAC wiil attempt to reinforce the Philippines from the south.
4. Task Group 58 will include 10 BBs, 5 CVs and a CVE. TG 58 will advance on a more northerly route(than originally envisioned) across the Pacific via Midway/ Wake/ Marianas/ Philippines.
5. Transport and assault TFs from San Francisco and the south Pacific will concentrate on Wake Island together with TG 58.
6. OPERATION SHOESTRING will comprise the assaults on the Marianas, namely Guam, Tinian and Saipan. D-Day for these assaults will be tentatively scheduled for the first week of June, 1942.
7. OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER will commence approximately 1 week prior to D-Day. OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER comprises the joint USAAF/ RAF/ RAAF/ DUTCH effort to achieve air superiority over the entire Philippine archipelago, close all Japanese airfields on Luzon and Mindanao, and attrition IJAAF and IJNAF aircraft prior to the commencement of OPERATION SHOESTRING.
8. On or about D-Day minus 6, Allied troops will be offloaded at both Port Moresby and Lunga in an attempt to draw IJN CVs to the south. The previous effort to reinforce Port Moresby in April, 1942 triggered a massive response by 6 IJN CVs based at Truk and resulted in the loss of over a dozen Allied AKs. It is hoped that the possible diversion of IJN CVs to the south can give you 2-4 days to establish airfields in the Marianas prior to the IJN carriers arrival in the Philippine Sea. Heavy Allied CAP will also be flown over Port Moresby in an attempt to lure the IJN CVs to the south.
9. INTEL has established the presence of BB Mutsu, BB Ise, BB Yamashiro and 4 CAs in the South China Sea. The remaining 7 IJN BBs and 13 CAs are believed to be based at Truk or the Home Islands. The 6 IJN CVs were last spotted at Truk.
10. USN CVs will be employed to scout ahead of the USN BBs, provide ASW patrols, cover TG 58 from air attacks and engage the IJN CVs when they appear.
11. The USN BBs, commanded by Admiral W. Lee, will attempt to engage the Japanese battleline and defeat it in detail during these operations. It is preferred that the engagement with the IJN battleline occur as a daytime gunnery action at long range.
12. Once the Marianas have been secured and air superiority in the Philippines has been achieved, B-17s from the Philippines will be flown in to Guam to neutralize the major Japanese airbase at Palau.
13. OPERATION SLAM DUNK entails the reinforcement of Luzon in conjuction with SEAC and will commence once all Japanese airfields( capable of basing Bettys) bordering the Philippine Sea have been neutralized.

Enclosure B: OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER

1) Japan currently controls 3 major airbases in the Philippine archipelago at
Cayagan, Clark and Aparri. Prior to arrival of Allied reinforcements on Luzon (OPERATION SLAM DUNK), these 3 airfields must be neutralized.
2) OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER will commence approximately 1 week
prior to the invasion of the Marianas(approximately 1 June, 1942).OPERATION
ROLLING THUNDER will entail the complete closure of all Japanese
airfields in the Philippines, attainment of Allied air superiority throughout the Philippine archipelago, and massive attrition of IJAAF and IJNAF aircraft.
3. Over 1000 Allied fighters and bombers are available in the SRA and northern
Australia to prosecute OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER. Over 200 Allied bombers will initially be based at Davao and Jolo to neutralize the Japanese airbase at Cayagan.
4. After 2 days of bombardment of Davao, 200 bombers will staged into Manila
(just enlarged to accommodate fully loaded B-17s) to suppress Japanese
airfields at Clark and Aparri.
5. Following suppression of all Japanese airbases in the Philippines USAAF
B-17s will be staged into Guam to neutralize the Japanese airbase at Palau.

Enclosure C: OPERATION SHOESTRING

1) TG 58 and all assault and supply TFs will rendezvous at their jumping off point approximately
900 nautical miles east of Saipan on D-Day minus 4.
2) Your CVs and BB TFs will make a fast run in on D-Day minus 2 to a position
150 miles east of Tinian, Scout planes will be launched at that time to extensively
recon Saipan,, Tinian and Guam.
3) On D-Day, TF 1010 with 32nd Division will assault Saipan. TF 1168 with 7th
Infantry will assault Guam. TF 1173 with the 1st USMC Division will assault
Tinian. TF 1117 with 138th RCT will assault Marcus.
4) Your floating reserve will consisit of 2nd USMC Division, 58th RCT, 24th
RCT, 153rd RCT, 1st USMC Raider Bn and 1st UCMC Para Bn.
5) Saipan should be captured by D-Day plus 2. Seabees and Aviation engineers
will make the Saipan airfield operational by D-Day plus 4. Saipan will
become the main forward port for the US Fleet in the central Pacific. AR
and AE ships are included in your fleet train for immediate use at Saipan.
500,000 fuel points are being carried in your fleet train for stockpiling
at Saigon.
6) Tinian and Guam should be captured by D-Day plus 6. 10th Corps HQ
North Pacific HQ will command all ground operations after being debarked at
Guam. Guam will become our main forward airbase in the central Pacific.
5th Air Force HQ should become operational on Guam by D-Day plus 8.
B-17s will then be staged into Guam from the Philippines and they will begin
Reducing the Japanese airfield at Palau. CV fighters may be required for
Bomber escort over Palau. Once Palau has been reduced, OPERATION
SLAM DUNK, the landings on Luzon can commence.

Enclosure D: OPERATION SLAM DUNK

1) OPERATION SLAM DUNK is actually 2 combined operations.
2) OPEARTION SLAM covers SEAC landings on Luzon.
3) OPERATION DUNK covers US landings on Luzon.
4) These 2 operations will require close cooperation between the USN and RN
5) Detailed instructions on OPERATION SLAM DUNK will be given
Following the successful completion of OPERATION SHOESTRING and
OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER.

Despite the efforts of the Allied naval bombers, Brunei is captured by Japan.

Due to the presence of KB, whats left of Allied shipping in the Makassar Straights will need to be withdrawn to Soerabaja.

CENTRAL PACIFIC:

As the American invasion forces join up off Wake Island, an urgent message is sent from Admiral Nimitz to Admiral Spruanc advising him of the presence of at least 3 IJN CVs in the south China Sea.

While the tactical situation has just gotten much easier for Spruance regarding OPERATION SHOESTRING, the situation facing the British in regards to the SEAC reinforcement of Luzon has become vastly more complicated.

Japan has been very conservative and methodical in this game.....the Allies have had plenty of time to prepare their defenses......2500 AV at Manila behind level 9 forts, 1200 AV at Soerabaja behind level 9 forts.....hence my decision to speed up the end game by a couple of years. I want to see at least one major CV vs CV battle under Nik Mod 9.1.

Here is the situation in the Philippines on 6/1/42:

OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER reaches a successful conclusion today as Aparri is shut down with 83% damage. Now all 3 Japanese airfields in the PI...Cayagan, Clark and Appari have been neutralized and it will be a simple matter to keep them closed.

This changes the entire strategic situation with respect to reinforcing Luzon. If they Allies dont control Java, or at the very least Soerabaja, then there will be no reinforcement of Luzon from the south. SEAC now considers diverting at least some of the forces earmarked for Luzon to reinforce Java.

Allied bombers on Borneo and in the southern PI must be redeployed for the defese of Java.

A bombardment TF with 4 BBs will visit Saipan tonight to reason with the CD units. There are actually 4 units on Saipan....2nd USMC Division will be diverted there to reinforce the 32nd Division and a shock attack will be ordered following aerial and naval bombardments. The Americans must capture at least one island immediately in order to project land based air over the area.

The 1st USMC Division has a much easier time going ashore at Tinian. I will let AKs offload supplies there for a couple days before assaulting the garrison.

SEAC launches OPERATION SLAM to relieve Luzon.

CENTPAC:

Things have really quieted down here following the capture of the Marianas. 500 US fighters and bombers are brought into the Marianas to reduce Japanese airfields at Pagan and Palau prior to the USN advance across the Philippine Sea. KB slowly approaches the Marianas from the west and Bombur heavily reinforces Palau with A6M2s, Nells and Bettys for the climatic battle. Thunderstorms are raging across the area as Task Group 58 reorganizes and refuels in preparation for the upcoming carrier battle which will decide supremacy in the central Pacific. USN transports and auxilliaries are withdrawn to the east as KB approaches.

The response of Allied naval bombers in the region is less than zero:

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
Martin 139: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
CL Sendai
BB Kongo

OPERATION SLAM.....the SEAC reinforcement of Luzon continues on schedule. Future IJN bombardment forays into the Sulu Sea may not find the environment quite so hospitable.

CENTPAC:

Allied recon over Palau draws a respose of 40 A6M2s...that means 3 daitais....about 80 fighters are on CAP over Palau. Palau has just been enlarged to leavel 5 so that means around 170 A6M2s, Nells and Bettys are on naval attack at 9 hex range.

The Allies have nearly 600 fighters and bombers on station in the Marianas at max 8 hex range.

Bombur is hiding behind his land based aircraft and I am hiding behind mine.

We have reached a "Mexican standoff".

OPERATION DUNK now begins with a more northerly route to avoid Japanese air based on Palau and Truk. The weather is still Thunderstorms. A carrier battle, if it develops, will occur outside the range of both Japanese and Allied land based air:

The 101st Aviation Regiment reinforces Jolo as OPERATION SLAM commences and SEAC/SWPAC reinforcements move up the straights of Makassar towards the Sulu Sea.

Huge reinforcement convoys transporting 2nd UK Divison, 18th UK Divison, 6th Australian Division, 7th Australian Division and over 250,000 supply advance towards Manila covered by 3 RN CVs and 4 RN BBs. Allied bombers suppress Brunei and Admiral Paliser with 2 BBs covers Allied landings on Jolo.

DEI:

IJA 55th Division has made it ashore at Batavia but overwhelming Allied naval bombers have kept it isolated. 1200 Allied AV are positioned at Tilatjap behind level 3 forts to block the Japanese and another 1200 AV sit behind level 9 forts at Soerabaja.

Here is a screen shot of the situation in the SRA/PI and the progress of OPERATION SLAM:
