Event editor help

I was modding a scenario and I mistakenly hit one of the sort buttons in the event editor. I have a backup copy of the scenario as it was before I did a massive formation/unit edit. I am seeking the least painful way of rebuilding the events (some 500 events!). From what I have read in the forum it is possible to export the events section of the scenario into xml, edit, then put import. So it should be possible to extract the good events form the backup then use these as the import data? What will I need to accomplish this software wise, as well as any practical tips?
