Condor Class Minesweepers

Post by Don Bowen »

Hey Sid

You've got a lot of data - do you have specs for the Condor class AMc that were at sea near Pearl on December 7th??

The Condor herself was eventually numbered AMS-192 - a motorminesweeper - we usually don't do them in WITP (but a few Dutch ones are in - and 4 Japanese).

She was 220 tons, 15 knots, one 3 inch gun, two 20mm AAA, two DCT and MS gear - crew = 32 men.

She spent most of the war in the US East Coast and Caribbean areas - moving to PTO in May 1945. Ten years later she was loaned to the Japanese (!!) Naval Self Defense Force and renamed Ukishima.

Originally numbered YMS-1, she was renumbered a third time as AMS-5 just before going to Japan - but served as YMS-192. Apparently a significant number of these were built. IF one wanted them in the game, RHS type two ship units should be used - because a classical minesweeper works in pairs - towing each end of a sweep. They can use paravanes - but ANY ship can do that - and "dangerous it is" Yoda might say.

Wrong one Sid.

This is the YMS-192. I'm interested in the AMc-14. Small but historically significant. Four of these ships were assigned to the Local Minesweeping Force at Pearl (Condor, Crossbill, Cockatoo, Reedbird). The first two were at sea off Pearl and (with Ward) engaged the midget subs.

Coastal minesweepers are in general not treated in WITP - because there are many hundreds - probably thousands - if all nations were added up. Yet there seem to be exceptions. As you move toward the center of the map, and toward the early phase of the war, exceptions tend to show up - probably because they mattered where there was nothing else. But mostly they are semi-abstract - represented by port levels.
