RE: Air raids on the Home Islands

Post by PzB74 »

I have released a large aviation unit in China were it will stay until it becomes clear were Andy is going to invade next.
Then my long range transports will move it to the threatened sector to improve our ability to launch major counter strikes.
Pretty sure the sly Scot is going to do something unexpected....just can't think of what it can be [;)]

When I finally manage to upgrade my A6M5's to A7M2's there will be no more high altitude kamis as the Reppu's ceiling is ca 35k feet.
Will have to use George's then, not sure I want to.

Don't think the Reppu will be a wonder weapon, but as far as I've heard the Shinden will.
Anyone knows the Shinden's max range - 2 (3) hexes?

Range for the J7W is 2/2 while the A7M2 has 4/5.
When will the production of the A6M8 start?

A6M8 production will start in 4 weeks on the 1st of June. Have placed A6M5's on upgrade - if the upgrade function
worked logically they should skip the A6M8 upgrade and go directly to the A7M2. Same with factories. This is were I think a change
is needed.

Will be nice to place Reppus on the Taiho; the ultimate Jap carrier flying Reppus, Judys and Graces.

Despite of having 300 fighters on CAP only half of them rose to meet the 60 or so Black Widdows.
Andy wanted to pave the way for his Wake based B-29s but the latter didn't take of.

Our CAP fighters were bounced time and again despite of fielding our most modern interceptors flown by
our best pilots. The enemy had flown all the way from Marcus Island. We lost 75 ac to 41 enemy.

This is why we need the Reppu and Shinden; radar is broken and enemy fighters are superior to ours despite
of figthing superior numbers.

Haven't seen anything more of the enemy fleets; only got 1 sub left in the area. Have to assume they're still in the area
between Midway and Marcus.

Anti invasion defenses are all but ready. In 2 days we receive 3 new destroyers and a sub.

The only good thing about this raid was the high enemy losses. Will take time to replace losses and rebuild morale.
Our losses were mostly green pilots and some bailed out. Have to provide Tokyo with LRCAP from other bases to protect it better.
Impossible to get enough fighters airborne.

The arrival of new units after 3-4 years of gameplay is one of the things that make WitP so enjoyable!
Imagine playing for years in order to finally get your hands on the biggest and meanest guns [:D][&o]
After the Reppu we will only be awaiting the arrival of the Shinden and the HA class radar equipped subs.

Been doing some checking regarding the not so funny things to come:

Allied A-bombs will be produced at the rate of 1 pr month starting from July 1945.
Only one special US B-29 group can deliver them.
If Allies use more than 2 A-bombs their victory level will be shifted negatively.
Allies can only achieve marginal victory if game does not end by August 1945.
What I still am uncertain about is whether a-bombs can be delivered from extended range or not. Pretty certain this isn't the case.
In real life they had to strip the B-29s to enable them to lift the monster bombs.

Soviet Union will auto-activate on 1st of August 1945.

I was considering whether I should activate Soviet Union a bit earlier in order to let Andy more and prepare his
units for assault - but since the Soviets didn't attack until 16th? of August 1945, the game has already an inbuilt
16 day time period for preparation.

That is very nice news indeed. [:D]
I was never able to bypass the A6M8. I never tried automated upgrades, only manual upgrade and that did not work. Guess one learns every day something new... [;)]
So I am looking forward to see the first air combat of the Reppu. Maybe it is just in time for the obviously upcomming next big invasion. [:'(]

I have another bad news for you: the a-bomb B-29s can not be intercepted they seem to just bypass the CAP. At least this was the case for the two a-bomb I got delivered to the home island so far. [8|]

I have tried several tests to get the special B-29 group (393rd NBS) to bomb from extended range and was not sucessful. Maybe bad luck, maybe it is indeed not possible.

Yes, give me 2 weeks and there will be 150 Reppus operational with another 150 coming online every 14 days! [8D]
Ah, so you didn't leave any A6M5 with auto upgrade on when you started producing the A7M2? [:'(] That's a bummer...

Well, Andy still doesn't have any bases from which he can deliver A-bombs from normal B-29 range - so I guess he's pretty motivated to do something about that.
But you may rest assured that i'm equally well motivated to prevent him [:-] Checked the manual, and it doesn't say anything about dropping a-bombs from extended range.

What happened with your industry in the cities that were hit by A-bombs? How many % of the different industries were destroyed or damaged?

There seems to be a big random factor build in. The first bomb hit Hiroshima and there was rather small damage. Only about 20% heavy industry was destroyed and another 20% damaged. The second bomb hit Gumma and destroyed almost all heavy industry and damaged all aircraft factories and almost destroyed two factories, the Ki-84 and the A7M2 factories that is. [8|] While the only one that was not damaged was the Ki-43 one. [8|]

I desided to use only manual upgrade since two of my elite sentais desided to upgrade at the same time to the Ki-84 the same day the RAF scheduled their base for a visit of Liberators. [:@]

LOL! Don't think any of my Oscar factories are damaged either. Not sure whether I should stop production, would like to..but I need escorts with a range of 10 hexes [:'(] I put individual Daitais on auto upgrade in rear area bases.

So Andy will most likely nuke Gumma and Tokyo/Hiroshima! Hm, think we can survive that.

If the Reppu manage 1-2 against the hated Corsair, I'll be happy...but I doubt it [:o]
With the numbers we're going to turn out we may not have to either!-)

Had a long review with Andy over the current situation and I tried to tell him how much I hope to avoid a carnage
invasion of the Home Islands before Japan has been weakened sufficiently. Today I found a 'dump' in Japan with 280k supplies.

Andy doesn't know it yet, but he will not be able to launch his invasion before large numbers of Reppus become operational.
Take a look at the attached screenshot!

Enemy fleets are gathering around Wake Island. The next week will be crucial - will he attempt a renewed invasion of the
Bonins, swing south to the Marianas (doubt it) or swing north towards the Home Islands? It's highly unlikely that he will sail
his fleets past the Bonins and Marianas to some other target as this would expose him to dangerous kami attacks. I'm sending our 3 damaged I class subs with search planes.

Received 3 new destroyers today and the Yamato is down to 15 sys damage.
One last time the Combined Fleet will be able to sortie against the enemy. All vessels with less than 25 sys damage will go to war.

Saigon Falls!

Post by PzB74 »

Been having talks with Andy about the current situation in WitP.
He is very frustrated about forts, huge numbers of Reppus to arrive etc.

I've encouraged him not to invade the Home Islands prematurely.
All bases there have 9 forts and at least 600 AP and I can bring in another 1000 AP within
a week. I don't want the game to end in a Dante's Inferno.

"The question is: How good are they (Reppu)?
What if they're not better than the George? Won't help me against your Corsairs.
Heard rumours about the Shinden, but fine little about the Reppu."

"I have now reinforced earlier weak spots in my defense and there is not a single worthwhile target
in the Home Islands with less than 600 APs and 9 forts. They can all be reinforced with a lot more APs within a week.
That's why I find it so impossible to conceive an Allied landing being successful. I will be facing a storm in the North soon...only 2.5 months away. We should discuss this aspect of the game a bit closer before time is up as well.
Been considering if you should get a month to prepare your Soviet Armies and move them into position in order to be ready to launch an offensive by the historic timeline."

As far as I understand from Andy's mails he is not going to invade the Home Islands. This may be FOW, but
large enemy forces are now leaving Wake and heading for the Bonins/Marianas [:'(]

It's a pain to be on the defensive, waiting for the enemy's next move....

Regarding Ohka production: 4 months production has left me with 23!!!!!!!!! in the pools [:(]
I have some 75 G4M2e's with an average exp of 75-77. Will push them above 80 before trying a launch.

The guns are falling silent in Europe, but there's no end in sight in the Pacific!

Carrier TF including the Bon Homme is now south of Iwo Jima and numerous enemy TFs are
following suit. Kamis are sent to the Bonins.

I'm taking precautionary actions in the PI and Marianas. Andy will meet the hated forts of his

Our best Zeke unit has been upgraded to the Reppu.
We now got 54 operational A7M2s. Will upgrade one Daitai every 2-3 days.

The question is where, when and how should we deploy them?
In as large number as possible in a favorable position against enemy aggression no doubt [:D]

Feel your pain PzB regarding the uber-cap and the Malaya operation. Its an oddity to say the least coupled with the abstraction of the landing routines that allows unlimited amphib ops at great distances. Still, your making a great game of it. Even if you end up losing on points you'll still have a morale vicotry. [;)]

I would deploy them against the CVEs that are escorting the transports to Malaya. 80 Reppus on escort... perhaps this could break the "CVE uber cap". Think the will suffer against the Corsair and Hellcat (hopefully not completely frustrating kill rates) but should take down Wildcats easily... should, when I look at the stats...

without CVEs, no more advance from Malaya. Of course I know there are a hundred of them, but not all available...
