here are three pics I thought you might like

The first two you might recognize as an MI 24 hind and a Badger. These guys came out to say hi when we snuck up on the sub base at Petropovolosk on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The last is the Russian ship Frunze on exercise in the Sea of Okostk.

Very nice, what ship were you on at that point - a sub?

You've got to admit that the Russians built some beautiful ships during that era.

So when's Matrix going to buy the rights to the Fleet series of US/USSR games?

In the late 80's!! How the heck did you get that close to a Russian cruiser? Talk about glasnost!!

What happened was the Frunze and her six escorts were doing maneuvering exercises, we slid right into the middle of their formation. We were alone. The Russians sent us a flashing light message saying "You are in the middle of our formation and a navagational hazard, please leave!"
We answered saying, "You are in the middle of our formation, please leave!" (formation 1[:D])

The Russians were a little touchy about the Sea of Okostk, they figure it is their swimming hole![8D]

As a side note, while we were watching this exercise, two of the Furnze's escorts had major engineering casualties and went dead in the water.[&:] Russia never realy understood how to operate ships.

The Russians and the US surface navies did a lot of eye-ball range passes at each other in the cold old days...

One of the benefits is pictures. Naval Intelligence dudes go over the pics with a microscope looking for new "upgrades" that may have been installed on a specific vessel.

I was on the USS Ranger in the South China Sea in 87(?) when a Soviet cruiser came over to say howdy. We let them know we thought that they were "number one".

Two of the old 5" 38's, single arm bandit tartar rear and asroc midships. I always liked the lines on them too. Heard a few interesting stories of some uses for the gun directors and those parabolic dishes!

Paul, is that you on the flight deck in the second shot? looks like a typical day in the south china sea![8D]

No, Actually I think that is from a Figlet - I Googled WADDELL and that came up - but DDG-2 don't hae a flight deck like that and RAST gear. I don't know what happened to my pix from that trip, but I had a couple good ones of "green water over mount 51" that was the closest one i could find onlne!

The Cruise book is online though. http://cruisebooks.usswaddell.com/Cruis ... %2087.html

I'm in there a couple time ;)

The Prinz Eugen didn't have cruise missiles. Nor SAMs. Good luck with that! [:'(]
