Some basic questions about the AI

Post by Pocus »

I see that the AI in the editor is programmed with a string of objectives and that each unit can have 3 such strings (tracks).

My guesses would be that these objectives acts as the operational AI, whereas it is left to the engine the tactical decisions on how to approach and take/keep these hexes. Am I right?

How units can switch from a track to another, by scripted events?

Hello Pocus my AI-loving friend :)
Yes AFAIK there's an AI "tac engine" to take care of how to go to the objectives. For the rest I'm not an expert but I'm not sure there's a way to change objectives/tracks using the event editor. You can change order (attack, defend..) and attitude with it, but to change objective the only method I know of is "replacing" the formation with another (same name and OoB...) ...

There's an article here
http://www.tdg.nu/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1149726148
about the care and feeding of Elmer. I plan to expand on it later, but it does talk about how he works.

There's a polog command-line option that you can add that will help you understand some of the internals of how he works.

Gah. Somebody set us up the bomb (wow, that brings back memories).

The TDG forum is once again suffering problems of an unknown origin. The crux is that several user accounts appear to have been deleted, and this in turn has disabled threads on which those users have recently posted. We've recovered from this before, it'll just take a little while.
