USS Princess Diana

Post by Black Mamba 1942 »

Good idea, or bad idea, to name a US Navy ship after a foreigner?[:D]

A Virginia class submarine.
Maybe the USS Diana Spencer, or Lady Spencer would be better.
Who knows what kind of crew could get posted on a ship named after a princess.[;)]

I dunno. Ya gotta be careful naming a US Navy ship after Di. If ya send 'er to the Middle East, she scuttles the Prince of Wales and winds up in bed with an oil prince, and then, she's always goin' down on ya...

Besides, she would always be subject to the fatal effects of the Benz...

How about the USS Canberra CA-70/CAG-2? How about the Ballistic Missile Submarine USS LaFayette SSBN-616. Or USS Simon Bolivar SSBN-641. Or USS Mariano G. Vallejo SSBN-658 (he was a US Citizen, but only become one when California became a state. He was originally Spanish). Lots of US ships (especially more important ones than attack subs) named after foreigners or foreign places.

Who knows what kind of crew could get posted on a ship named after a princess.

Sailors are more than capable of making new trouble where there shouldn't be otherwise.

Case: The USS Puget Sound (classified as a non-combatant) receives an unofficial nickname: the "Pubic Mound" due to having female service members as part of the crew.

edit: I gotta work on my communication skills. My point was that sailors are going to find ways to make trouble for themselves no matter what, so there is little point in making national policy based on avoiding that trouble.

Phwew.... just checked the date of the original BBC story. Guess what... [;)]

"Think of the positives," urged Andrew Woolhouse, Director of Citizens Against Landmines, Poverty, and Social Disenfranchisement. "Consider the moral effect on the enemy when one of their warships is sunk by the Princess Diana."

Rather a good one actually.. [:D]

But Why God???...............even Prince Charles has done more for the US than she did. Heck I would even settle for the USS Tony Blair. You must admit it has a certain ring to it.

Howzabout the USS Margaret Thatcher? You could equip 'er with Intercuntinental Baglistic Missiles. Then, there's the USS Ho Chi Minh, a psychological warfare vessel that would incite American public opinion in favor of whomever it fought. Let's have the USS Vicente Fox, a ship with a big smile on the prow and an outstretched hand of friendship that carries an immense ordnance load of stealth torpedoes filled with illegal aliens...

Being British is irrelevant ,

I find it hard to believe the US Navy has decided on Princess Diana as most deserving and appropriate.

What is it that I am missing that Princess Diana is deserving of such a honor.

I don't think she would like it anyway....being a staunch advocate of peace.

I don't know what she did to deserve it. Britain has this big thing about Diana. I personally saw her interview on the BBC and I thought she was acting up to the camera. I'm sure wrongs were done to her...but in the big light of day, there are hundreds of thousands of people still living in squaler and poverty in the UK - I think the wrongs done to them are more in need of attention.

I didn't dislike the woman....I just saw her manipulating the camera, the public and the interviewee on that BBC documentary.

My opinion.

On a lighter note, the USS Matrix...I theink they've done more for the wargaming community than Princess Diana did for anyone else.
