Harpoon!!

Post by Kai »

I was reading old postings in the forums and saw that Matrix is is going to resurect the Harpoon computer games.

Harpoon was the first computer war game I ever played, and still one of my favorites.

Head to head Harpoon should be pretty intense.

Can't wait to see it released.

We have a very very good shot at getting the first H3 ANW release done this month and HCCE is hot on it's heels. So if you are interested, drop me a line regarding testing, content, quantity, the blurb, etc.
Here is something that looks promising. According to the owner of AGSI, they hope to get a release copy of Harpoon3 Advanced Naval Warfare out by the end of the month. AGSI

From what I've heard, ANW will only be available for the PC/Windows and not the MAC.

I don't think he meant PC:Mac thing - I think he meant to ask will it be true Windows XP application, and I'd add - preferably with UI and graphics update?

I wanted so hard to love Harpoon III but demo I downloaded looked and felt like something outta 80s, running on DOS 3.3. Behind all that might have been the most realistic, best simulation ever to see the light, but I just don't have will or time to play such prehistoric game designs (and I am sure many share my opinion).

Witp version of cold war. Short times phases could work well with speedy modern warfare.

O.

Thats what I meant.

Te game engine sounds very good indeed. If the look was updated to even HC2002 status I'd buy it.

Thanks for clarifying that. On that note, then I think that the answer is, "No". It is going to look like the same thing that you saw in the Demo. You can check out their Beta release and, graphically, it has changed very little.

I've read the discussion from afar and am pretty certain that changes like UI and graphics won't come into effect until the next iteration of the game is released. I think that they currently call it, The Next Harpoon.

I totally agree. The graphics ARE out of the eighties. [;)] Both Harpoon 3 and Harpoon Classic are more "Tell me what is happening" rather than the "Show me what is happening kind of game".

I agree that the graphics on the HCG version is a bit more eye-appealing. I think that it is worthwhile to note that that is all they are for HCG. I am pretty certain that the terrain / map effects don't mean much in HCG. i.e. you cannot hide your aircraft behind a mountain ridge.

However, this isn't quite the case in Harpoon 3. For the most part, the terrain does come into play and you can hide ships from radar behind islands and such. There is a bug, but it works in most cases.

I will wait for the new game I think. However I shall buy it if it is welcomed by the current Harpoon players.

The current version of the original Harpoon game is now called Harpoon Classic Gold is pretty good. It is worth buying from the AGSI website to hold you over till Matrix has a chance to up date it and publish a new version. As it stands right now, they have updated the Game Engine so it is a litte meaner and harder then the original. Things such as submarines being harder to detect, the AI randomly attacking any of your units that were with in range of his air units, submarines going in the for the kill if they were controlled by the AI. On top of that they have created an modifiable database and database editior using Acess 2000. So if you can add or modify just about everything in the game from the bases and thier location to building your own version of a supercarrier. With the new database there also came to be an update to the last battleset called European Campaign 2003. This was one where the US and Europe had a falling out over the US response to a terrorism incident and went to war with each other. The maps had been colorized in the game so to a point it projected what it would look like if you had a satelitte view of the battleset. Just before AGSI allowed Matrix to use the license there was a beta to produce the Western Pacific. From what I saw the map stretch from the international date line on the eastern boarder all the way to just past Bangkok on the western border and included parts of the Bearing Islands and went as far south as Northern Australia. It was still in beta had has some rough parts to it, in this beta they were also testing mobile platforms. I don't know how far they were able to get with them besides creating the icons and getting some of them to work (such as SCUD launchers) like they should.

Most Harpoon players I know thought that the 3-D graphics that were shown by SSI/UbiSoft when they had the H4 license were nice, but really cared about game play. In that could they build thier own scenarios, how aggressive was the AI, since Harpoon 3 had come out during that timeframe the other question was could the modify the data base. After Ubisoft fumbled with H4, everyone retreated to playing either Harpoon3, Harpoon Classic, or both. I have both and enjoyed them both. I really can't wait to see what is going to happen when Matrix picks it up and I wish that Matrix would give us an update as to what is going on.

Take my word for it. You never want to be involved in an “International Incident”.

Glad to hear of someone else who is able to play and enjoy both versions of computer Harpoon. In case anyone was wondering, here is the playing area for the WestPac map.

I, for one, am more comfortable with the archiac type of graphics. I spent 3 1/2 years on a destroyer back in 70s as an Operations Specialist. This means that I spent all of my time at sea in the dark cave called the Combat Information Center. I grew comfortable, mainly because I had to[:D], with all of the symbology and tactics as well. This 3D stuff is for the birds IMO for a game like this. Even though I wasn't an officer (thank goodness[;)]) I became familiar and proficient in modern Naval Warfare tactics, like knowing when to put on my life vest when the Bears appeared and the Tomcats didn't get them and also to abandon ship when the Backfires launched their ASMs. But I digress I am really looking forward to this release and will buy it when it comes out. It is games like this where Broadband really pays off[&o][:D]

Looks like I'll have a really experience opponent. I look forward to a traditional NATO / Warsaw Pact confrontation with you!
