This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Recon

Post by thedoctorking »

I've been in the habit of reconning every front-line hex, especially as the Germans, who have oodles of recon aircraft at the beginning of the game. Any reason not to do this?

I'm having difficulty figuring out how the recon air mission works. I know that there is detection level that you get from recon and being adjacent to enemy units. What I don't understand is how air recon contributes to detection level.

How can I check detection level (aside from looking at the units represented on the map and noting that I can see type, combat value, etc.)?

Can use up fuel and supply, and fatigue planes. Having said that for recon it is not very significant, and for the lighter German recon types almost insignificant. It can give Soviet interceptors many more opportunities to occasionally shoot down a recon plane building their experience etc. However it will fatigue the opposition air force and your recon can build experience of its own. Also as you raise detection levels you raise the possibility of ground interdiction. If your bombers have a habit of flying unescorted the opposition can use this to its advantage to intercept and shoot them down.

Usually after each recon mission you will see the detection level go up - although there is a maximum of 5 for airbases, 4 for others in clear terrain, 2 otherwise if near your units or else 1.

Recon is useful if you want to penetrate enemy defenses, you need to know where enemy units are in the deep, to bypass them.

Higher detection level also helps in combat, increasing enemy losses.

One query I had, can air recon ever increase detection levels beyond what they would get anyway just from being next to a ground unit. If not does that mean air recon could only increase enemy losses from air only missions?

Be caucious with Soviet recon aircraft when playing the 41-45 camapaign. You only produce 12 per turn throughout the war and the Luftwaffe will blow through your starting pool pretty quick if you're not careful leaving you partially blind in the critical Summer of 1942.

OK, thanks, I see the detection level now.

What does "SP" mean? So for example my report for a hex says "20 SAD Air Base 77/85 Det 5 SP 0" then it lists the air units and the number of each type of aircraft there.

So if I have detection level 10 against all units in a hex there is no point in recon there?

I think something like supply path or supply points - how far to rail/port supply and is for all units not just airbases.

If the recon were just to further raise their levels of detection then no. Indeed beyond five or often less (see above) air recon is useless. However there may be other reasons to do recon there. For example you might suspect there are other units in that hex, or nearby, that have detection level 0 (invisible to you) and by flying recon there you may discover them.

One thing I do is recon to find units at the maximum possible level as Telemecus pointed out. If a unit is in the woods the detection level for a non base hex not in range of enemy units is ‘1’. But if I really need to raise the detection level on the unit (for example interdiction) i unit bomb the target to raise the detection level as additional recon is useless.
