RE: HOW TO DETACH INFANTRY FROM THEIR VEHICLES
Your dismounted infantry are now selected but your vehicles are not selected.
BEWARE
Don't click anything else yet, or you will lose the selected infantry. You will have to repeat the process to select them again.
SOLUTION
Immediately assign a number (e.g. press CTRL + 1) to the selected infantry. You can later press '1' to select them again.

RE: HOW TO DETACH INFANTRY FROM THEIR VEHICLES
Order the infantry to move somewhere and the APCs will stay put.
You can repeat the process and this time select the APCs. Assign them a different number (e.g. '2').
Now you can press '1' and move your infantry forward with APC over watch, then press 2 and re-position your APCs.
No more APCs stuck in the woods - move them in road march formation along a road while the infantry spread out into the trees on either flank.
The game just took on a whole new dimension for me. I can't believe I didn't spot this earlier!!!

To separate a single Squad from its vehicle:
1. Select the SQUAD.
2. Right click on the PLATOON button - not the Squad button.
3. You know the rest.

I juts click the dismount icon (square with arrow).
RE: HOW TO DETACH INFANTRY FROM THEIR VEHICLES
Wow thanks a bunch for this guide, excellent work, much appreciated! I've seen the 'filter' function at times, but never really did figure out how to use it properly. Like you said, this is perfect for when you want to recon through a forest with the APCs following the road.
@Wodin - dismount does not separate the infantry from the vehicle, you still command them as one.
This will come in use playing the Germans at Krasnaya Polyana, you have tons of pzgrenadiers in halftracks.

The point of this thread is not how to dismount. It's how to separate the infantry from the vehicle so that they can move independently.
If you just dismount, the whole squad (infantry PLUS vehicle) will still move together.
Please take another look

I am starting the campaign over because I lost a ton of half tracks that followed right behind their Panzer Grens.

Once again I thank you red for explaining all of the little nuances of this game and your efforts have resulted in a broader understanding of this gem for me.

Yes, I think the filter thingy was introduced in 5.80. No need to not update if you ask me

"Also for a future release - can we split the Infantry from their vehicle so that the vehicle can stay behind, take a different route or provide covering fire? It is frustrating sometimes that if I attack into woods the vehicles must come along, even though they will get stuck."
"This feature present from first release APK43
Use selection filters for it."Quote fom Andrey. So,it seems this option was always there back to when the game was first introduced with the game engine 5.75 but most players never knew it.Myself included.

RE: HOW TO DETACH INFANTRY FROM THEIR VEHICLES
I think there used to be buttons in the UI for selecting INF only, VEH only, etc. in 577 and earlier versions.
Now it's changed to the format in my screenies.
I played the first KP battle over again, with my infantry forward and the HTs providing covering fire - huge difference.

I checked and you're right, it's been there all along.
"most players never knew it." Yes, but how would we when there's no mention of that feature in the manual. [:)]
