FDRLincoln's Toy Box Mod

Post by FDRLincoln »

Back in the old WitP days, I created what I called the "Toybox" mod. Some of the things in the mod (Kaitens for example) ended up in AE.

The purpose of the ToyBox mod was, well, to have new toys. It wasn't intended to be historically accurate, but it wasn't intended to be a pure flight of fancy either. The Dutch aviation cruiser Celebes and the Japanese survey ship Tsukushi were two of the toys in the mod, for example...so this will be a combination of conjectural items and real life items.

Anyway, I'm going to do this mod over again for AE. Celebes and Tsukushi will be in it. Other things that will also be included:

**A fairly austere refit of the old Japanese CA/BC Kurama. In the mod, the Japanese were allowed to keep her under the Washington Treaty as a training ship, but refit her for service as a coastal patrol and training ship in the late 30s. I will also perform similar conversions on the old armored cruisers. You don't want to send these things into harms way against modern units, but they could have their uses...shore bombardment, convoy escort, etc.

**A small number of additional old CLs and DDs for the ANZAC navies

**A CS for the US Navy build on a Brooklyn hull

**The French submarine Surcouf

**A Japanese equivalent to the Surcouf: a commerce raiding sub with 8 inch guns.

The game engine is not well suited to the last two items. We don't simulate the fact that it took Surcouf FIFTEEN MINUTES to dive, for instance.

Nice.

I realize that the game engine may not model something extreme like Surcouf well, but that isn't the point of the toybox.

In Truth, Surcouf is so big, its likely to get sunk easily enough anyway. It's a large sub with big guns...an aggressive commander in game will likely try to use those guns.

Add HMAS Sydney, Perth Class, based at Bunbury or Perth.

And I supposed you would have to add a Kormoran type AMC as well.

I would like to see:

A small seaplane for Allied subs, I'm sick of continual sightings by the japanese version. Make the KB suffer a bit!

Funny you should mention Sydney.

I had her in the WitP mod. I also had some of the Japanese AMCs. Early in a PBEM game against Aztez, Sydney and one of the AMCs met at mid-ocean, had a fierce battle, and sank each other.

Just like in real life, although it was a Japanese AMC rather than a German one.
