Destroyer Officers

Post by vettim89 »

Working on my AAR, I find myself in need of a source as to what were the usual officer billets on a USN Destroyer during WWII. I have found amazingly detailed information on the enlisted billets right down to what the GQ duties were for each billet. Unfortunately, I am coming up empty on the officers.

For example, the Mahan Class DD has thirteen officers. They would be (for sure):

CO
XO
Gunnery Officer ( and likley an assistant)
Navigator ( and likely an assistant)
Engineering officer (and an assitant)
Communication/Signals officer
Supply Officer

So that's ten. Did DDs have Air Defense officers? Was there an additional officer in charge of RADAR and/or SONAR? Did DDs have a 1st Lieutenant? Thats just scraping the serface of the options.

Anyone know for sure or have a good (preferably on-line) resource?

Oops, forgot the Torpedo Officer. I knew I had eleven when I started out.

Found it! Although there is an obvious erroy (there is an ass't Gunnery officer but no Gunnery officer) I suspect the stores/commisary officer may be one in the same. Adding a Gunnery Officer and you get 13. Its what I am using unless some one has something better.

NOT in OUR Navy Simon. It's a different position.

Sonar ,RADAR and Air deffense would came later, they didn't exist in the early part of the war. If it was a DESRON Flag it would carry the Comodore and his staff, and maybe a Squadron doctor, if available .

For boarding parties, Number Two is indispensable:
