1926 Grand Campaign: Connfire (J) vs. Pmbodkin (A)

Post by Connfire »

Standard house rules - 3 day turns, sub doctrines off, fog of war on, extremely variable reinforcements, and individual Allied countries only activated when attacked.

This is Pmbodkin's first PBEM ever, and Connfire's first PBEM playing as Japanese or in the 1926 Grand Campaign, so it should be interesting. [;)]

Prelude to War

Post by Connfire »

January 12, 1922: The discovery that the USA has broken the Japanese diplomatic code, and is using it to its advantage in naval disarmament talks, leads to Japan withdrawing from the Washington Naval Conference. Subsequent attempts to restart the talks prove fruitless, with Japan stating it will not deal with dishonorable governments.

May 16, 1922: Manchurian nationalists, with Japanese backing, declare Manchuria an independent nation. Japan sends forces into Manchuria to support the new government. China immediately mobilizes for war against Japan.

May 18, 1922: Still stinging from Japan's withdrawal from the Naval Conference, President Harding intervenes, announcing he is moving a large US fleet to Shanghai, and saying the USA will enforce the Open Door policy in China.

May 24, 1922: With a large US Fleet anchored at Shanghai, President Harding attempts to arrive a a diplomatic solution, offering a treaty which will leave Manchuria demilitarized, though under nominal Chinese control. He further states the US fleet will withdraw from Shanghai if Japan withdraws all of its forces back to Japanese territory.

May 31, 1922: After a week of debate, the Japanese government agrees to President Harding's terms and withdraws from Manchuria. While the world lauds President Harding's preventing a war, the military and many others in Japan see this as another major dishonor, a fact that the USA and other western nations don't fully comprehend.

The Japanese government falls within a month, and is replaced by one which is much more nationalistic, and is dominated by the military. Concerned about these developments, President Harding signs a mutual defense pact with China only a few weeks before his death on August 2, 1923.

In the years that follow, the Japanese military is built up. Several rebellions which flare up in China and the Philippines are rumored to have had Japanese backing. From time to time, Japan reminds the world that it still harbors a Manchurian "government in exile".

Meanwhile, under President Coolidge, the USA starts to drift away from its Asian commitments. By May of 1926, many American insiders question if President Coolidge would actually honor the US-Chinese mutual defense pact if Japan were to attack China. This fact is lost upon the Japanese, who assume that the USA will come to China's aid if and when they attack it.

And on May 31, 1926, four years to the day it backed down from the first Manchurian incident, Japan shocks the world when it suddenly announces that a state of war now exists between it and the "Sino-American alliance"...

Message from Japan to the European nations: Due to the state of war that now exists in China, the Japanese government strongly urges the British and French governments to withdraw their forces as soon as possible from Tientsin, either to their own territories or to Shanghai. As of this time, we can guarantee safe passage, but as the war progresses this may change, and we wish to avoid regrettable incidents. The Japanese people have no quarrel with any European nation, which is why we strongly urge them keep their military forces clear from any combat zone in China, the Philippines, or the Pacific Ocean.

Awesome, thank you. Neither of our biggest-gunned ships have seen combat yet, but that can change at any time. [8D]

The Empire of Japan is pleased to announce that its victorious forces have restored of the legitamite government of Manchuko to its capitol of Mukden. A mutual defense treaty has been signed between our two nations. Furthermore, we formally petition the League of Nations to admit this formerly oppressed nation as a full member.

Below is a photograph of our heroic army leading the government's return through the city's ancient gates two days ago -

The Empire of Japan once again urges neutral countries, particularly its British and French friends, to evacuate the war zones in northern China. In particular, we cannot guarantee that the railroad from Peking to Shanghai, via Tientsin and Nanking, will remain open much longer. Likewise, the coastline between Hangchow and Canton has become a war zone. For your own safety please avoid this area. Although the war has unfortunately come close to it, Japan continues to respect the sovereignty of Hong Kong.

We trust that our longtime British friends share our surprise that American warships have recently appeared off Hong Kong, and similarly trust that they will handle this and any further intrusions of their neutrality in accordance to the rules of war and the Geneva Convention.

RE: Landing broke up off Canton

Post by pmbodkin »

The British Foreign Ministry would like to inform our Japanese Collegues that the Royal Navy has determined that two (2) small U.S. Navy warships have indeed been granted asylum at the Crown Colony of Hong Kong within the past 48 hours. This action was taken by the Governor of the Crown Colony as a humanitarian gesture only, and does not reflect a change in policy on behlaf of His Majesty's Government. Rather, the action taken by the Governor, without direct consultation with London, was done at his own volition and without properl authorization by the Prime Minister. The Crown Colony Governer apparently made this decision based on his own personal understanding of long-accepted practices of Maritime Emergency Expendiancy. Furthermore, a subsequent inspection of the said two vessels determined that neither were sea-worthy and that it is the Admiralty's opinion that these warships do not constitute a threat of any kind to the Japanese Empire in their present condition. Both vessels will remain interred at the HK Naval Facility until a formal Boad of Inquiry has completed it's investigation of this situation. The Admiralty would welcome a delegation from the Imperial Japanese Navy to conduct an independent inspection of these vessels and it's own investigation into this matter in the interest of maintaining full transparancy regarding this unexpected development." Lingayan falls, 4 cities added to Manchuko

Japan appreciates the British Foreign ministry's candor and cooperation on this matter. We are taking decisive steps to resolve the combat operations in the Hong Kong area against our Chinese adversaries. The Japanese have great respect and admiration for our fellow island nation, and regret that its citizens in Hong Kong have been placed in this uncomfortable position.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

DD Tracy scuttled to avoid capture

The Battle of Wake was pretty intense - the US Pacific Fleet snuck in at night, and I didn't know they were in the area until they were right on top of the Japanese Combined Fleet. As luck would have it every dreadnought in the Combined Fleet was there, which was a good thing, because with a few exceptions every dreadnought in the Pacific Fleet came along for the party, too. By dawn they had departed, each side lost a DD, and it was time to see how much damage was done.

Kirk's graphics look great, don't they? [8D]

Another screenshot of the battle

Here is another view of the battle, when a smaller force built around the BB Aki and BB Satsuma jumped into the fray. Kirk introduced both of these BB graphics earlier in the day, and I added them, not knowing they'd be seeing combat within hours!
