Bombing Strategy

Post by Beruldsen »

Newbie here. I've played a few of the small scenarios (Minsk, Smolensk, Kiev)...and with the exception of Minsk...always seem to fall a bit short of winning (playing as Axis).

Obviously in the first turn or two...there is much to be gained by bombing airfields...but later how should I best utilize my aircraft. What type of targets (units or cities) and where should they be positioned.

Damn...a lot to learn in this game. I'll defer asking about how to best utilize HQs later...

After T1 I just use for default ground attack turned off when not needed to save waste - at least when I remember. bombing airfields T2 is a bit of a waste unless perhaps you are gonig to overrun them that turn. Only special missions are the all-important fuel resupply drops

HQs easy -just ensure you have as few units as possible out of command range whilst keeing HQs safe -bad news if russian displaces one

When in air supply mode I beleive the JU-52s will drop fuel by default on panzers and supplies by default on infantry. However to be sure, hold the shift key and select the target hex. A window will open allowing you to select the aircraft desired to carry the product and escort the mission plus a few options on the bottom right allowing you to select the type of supplies desired.

Air Supply is always supplies by default. you have to manually select for FUEL.

How do you manually select Fuel. And secondly...how can you tell how many fuel drops you have?

Thanks so much...

Don't worry - it took help from forum for me to get it right.

easiest way click on airdrop toolbar then rt click on unityou want to supply if you want it done automatically or hold shift then R click on target unit then chose dropping units. All just like other bombing.
Then bottom right it will say FUEL so click that if you want to drop supplies ( or v versa) then click LAUNCH

Again like bombing transports will drop more than once if they have MPs. Think level bombers also but may be wrong.

IMHO drop all the fuel you can on mobile units or their corps HQs not supplies. Best done at end of turn so unit has fuel it can use next turn. Drops at start of turn don't inc. MPs that turn.

Suggest you also now read relevant part of manual

Interesting, each time I have used the default air supply on selected panzer units, its the fuel % that increases not the supply. Also, each time I manually select aircraft for supply missions, its the fue that is default for mobile units and supplies for infantry type units. If I need supplies and not fuel for a mobile unit, I have to manually change it.

Yep. I always shift-right click for airdrop, then select my units and select fuel. Then drop on the panzer HQs.

Note that if you do some air drops at the start of your turn (after turn 1), you will have most of your level bombers available. They can drop a lot of fuel.
