Reprise: Comintern

Post by Chocolino »

This is a three player PBEM using V1.3

House Rules:
- Germany and UK get a 50% production bonus
- Per turn Production Point transfers between countries cannot exceed 10% of current per turn PP earnings of the country providing it. (Exception: USA where this adds to the already existing lend lease of 50PP).
- the previous PP transfer rules

This is essentially a replay of the Air-Land-Sea game with the new 10% PP rule.

The Politburo has an eerie feeling of Deja Vu and it seems as if we had been in this situation just shortly ago. But that cannot be true and must have been an earlier war game at the academy.

Germany invades Poland. We watch with interest and await the outcome. Our units are frozen and we need to find out how to mobilize them and how to increase our war economy soon. Hawks propose an immediate declaration of war, but the majority of the leadership is still cautious.

October 1939

The Russian leadership is surprised at the early fall of Poland. If the Axis honors the M-R pact, we may soon get the opportunity to occupy eastern Poland and move our units a bit westward. We still debate the best first steps for the USSR.

November 1939

We move into Eastern Poland as the result of the M-R pact. Our war economy increases to 65% but we hope it increases even further if we are in an active war - hence we declare one on Estonia. (Not sure if this really affects the war economy since Estonia is only a minor - just experimenting)

December 1939

The USSR armed forces slowly come into gear after a long slumber. Russian units are unfrozen and we can transport tanks to Leningrad, the nearest rail head to Tallinn.

The plan of the Politburo to increase the Russian economy early is coming to fruition. Russia is becoming alive as the result of the war with Estonia. The war economy is now at 72%. This could mean significantly higher earnings of PP over the coming month. (But since I haven't played the Russians before, I am not sure what would have been the case without the war, comments welcome).

Estonia's capital is invested and the heroic war in the Baltic further motivates the Russian work force to increase its war economy.

We need an air force to conduct sieges successfully, so we build one. We also build some additional L1 Inf corps for the expected defense against the over-aggressive German Reich.

We occupy Tallinn after a successful siege. Our new air force provided the necessary force. In order to maintain our war status, we immediately declare another war against Latvia.

Our liberation of Latvia has caused concern in Western circles. Their diplomatic notes are probably just meant to distract their own population from the danger of invading Axis forces. But the French Ambassador has been summoned to the Kremlin to explain the note of his government:
The Flotte d'Balte is sailing off the coasts of the former Estonia, and Latvia to make sure your Red Army honors the rights of the citizens. Your high handed ways are not gaining you commendations in the world's press.

French valor and prowess has allowed the Third Republic to retore freedom to gallant Denmark, and her navy will serve to remind you of your neutrality.

But since the Russian people have been requested by the enslaved Baltic worker class to liberate and aid them in the search of freedom we responded:

We are of course used to be portrayed as the Pariah's of the world by decadent Western governments. But in this instance we cannot understand the concern at all as we liberate the grateful Baltic proletariat from its previous oppressors. In our eyes it is the French much more than ourselves who deserve to be admonished about their international role. While they comment on Russian high handedness, they conquer Denmark in the same turn. If the French are serious about the liberation of Denmark, they should immediately withdraw from Danish territory now and remove also their fleet form the Baltic. Otherwise it looks as if one harsh regime just handed over the reigns to the next.

While our western neighbors are already involved in large scale operations, we can still pick and chose our activities. We will later suffer even more though. We have completed the campaign in Latvia and move on to Lithuania. The effect on the war economy is pleasant.

We surround Kaunas and start the siege of the city. In the meanwhile we debate how to defend best against the expected early German attack. The Russian General Staff has studied previous war games (Half Again and Europe in Flames) and finds that it will be very difficult no matter what. Still we will not relinquish any Russian soil without making the intruders pay the highest possible price.

You may not have a seige on Kaunas! There is a bug about neutral borders and seiges. Ask Gary to let you know if he does get a seige report during the interturn. If not you will have to assault to take Kaunas.

Good point. I think you are correct in that there will be no siege (and that is ok and actually realistic). I think I can also see in my "Report" section if a siege occurs. If not I will find out how battle ready the Soviets really are. Right now it looks like a 5-1 at most and I may have to upgrade first. But then a slight prolongation of the war may actually help my economy again and is not entirely unwelcome at this stage.

A siege on Kaunas did in fact not take place. The Lithuanians received supply via routes that pass through neutral Germany (neutral to the USSR - LIT war). That is of course a severe breach of international law and hence a Casus Belli. We will not act upon it immediately but reserve the right to do so later.

We complete the Baltic campaign and hope the Germans are still occupied elsewhere so that we are not forced to play a second one soon. We also attack Finland to stay in a state of war for economic reasons. (Still have to play an AI game to compare this with the economy of an inactive USSR).

The Finish campaign makes progress as we cut off Vyborg. But we hear that the Finish have requested Military advisers from Germany to conduct the defense. The Germans have dispatched their best man, Gary Gardner, to Finland even though he is at the same time directing campaigns in southern Europe as well.

We have committed some of our best units to the Finish campaign. The high command will make them available only for as long as no other threats exist. German observers are still visible across our border to the Reich.

not much to show, just moved forward a bit in Finland

June 9th, 1940

It looks we can now break through to the Finish capital. We were able to destroy a good portion of the Finish defense forces and unless they get foreign military aid, they will fall soon.

Our focus however is on the defense against a Germany attack but we are not sure if we can do enough to hold the German juggernaut back once it comes. The good news is that the Western Allied commander is doing an excellent job at distracting the German forces in France and Germany. Every month delay buys us several Infantry corps that can strengthen the line.

The Russian war economy did not grow beyond 102% and fluctuates a bit (why?) between 100% and 102% depending on the turn.

Finland is still the only campaign the USSR is engaged in. But most of our nations resources bolsters our defenses (if bolster is the right word here since the lines look very flimsy indeed). We also hear with concern reports in the Western media that French refugees have been expelled from Copenhagen since their French passports suddenly expired with the fall of Marseilles. We have hoped the Danish would be more open to let French culture live on in Copenhagen.

Helsinki falls but there is one more city to conquer before Finland falls. We hope we can finalize this before a German attack.
