FULDA 76 MikeJ19 is WP, larry is NATO

Post by larryfulkerson »

Here's a close-up of the areas where the action is maximized. I've got to break bridges as I retreat with the recon units and see if I can't form some sort of rudimentary roadblock on the roads to buy enough time for the reinforcements to arrive and save the day.

Here's the inventory and the first turn losses. These kind of losses may turn out to be typical for each turn. I lost a lot of good helicopters. I think this is because they flew CS missions in the face of terrific AS by the Soviets. I told Mike in an email that it was my opinion that the air war needs to be fought first because not having air superiority means fighting with one hand tied behind your back. So I need to find my SSM's and target his airfields, doing a recon by fire to find the most important targets, the fighters, and bombard them good and proper. A cursory check finds all my SSM's out of range of his airfields so I'll have to move them. Mike has his INT missions set ready to go most likely so I'll have to first find an AA unit and move it back and forth until it's isn't intercepted any longer and THEN move the SSM's.

Here's some of the reinforcements that I can look forward to. Slim pickens. And there's a big gap between T4 and T7 where there's nothing at all. So I'll have to fight for the most part with what I have already. The air losses meter shows an imbalance between his AS value and mine and that tells me that I've got an uphill battle to fight. My aircraft aren't all that much better than his and my pilots are probably similar to his in proficiency which tells me that I need to use my surface assets to bombard his airfields soonest. It turns out that I have 2 SSM units and their range is 25 which is short of reaching the WP airfields. On the other hand he's got SSM's that can reach my airfields with no trouble. D'oh.

Everytime I move a unit the WP intercepters strike it and my fighters respond to his fighters and pretty soon the moving unit evaporates and all my fighters are degraded. I've moved three units so far, I've lost one of my 2 SSM's and an armour unit and I don't remember what the third one was but I've determined that I can't move my units this turn....the INT missions are too deadly. And now all my fighters are out of service so I'm wondering if I should turn off the CS missions because without escorts they will be slaughtered. I think maybe that's what I should do, for now.

New moves from Mike and this is the combat replay ready to start. In other words nobody has moved yet and it's the WP units that are going to move and I'm wondering what Mike is going to do next. He's hard to predict. I'm expecting the appearance of more WP vehicles appearing onmap this turn.

I didn't see any new units appear and his onmap units didn't move very far and he's been busy surrounding my units and there were some attack noises but I didn't see any units move because of the attack(s). One Special Forces unit flew into the middle straddling a bridge on a road and I'm going to have to get rid of him to cross the bridge. He's probably already blown it.

Here's Mike's attacks and of the airfield attacks there was an entire squadron of F-4E's that evaporated and there was a West German Alpha Jet squadron that evaporated and a lot of my other squadrons lost a handfull of planes. There were land attacks that caused RBC's and losses. I'm afraid of his INT so I'll have to move something and see if it's still turned on. Otherwise I won't be able to move very much very far.

Here's the conditiion of the aircraft now. Several are missing. Nobody is flying and for the duration of the game they may not fly again. I'm sure Mike will give them some love each turn.

Here's my answer to Mike's moves. I'm putting my units in his path in an attempt to slow down his advance and buy more time to allow the reinforcementns to arrive and save the day. Mike has landed his special forces units on one of the roads I would have used to travel to the action. Some of my forces are going to have to detour and won't arrive on time now. I have scheduled two attacks and I'm ready to pull the trigger. Oh, and the Soviets killed my other SSM so now I have none. Of all my aircraft only one attack helicopter can fly and it's grounded because of the enemy AS value. I'm convinced it would be shot out of the sky on takeoff. I broke several bridges in an attempt to try to channel the attackers to only one avenue of approach. I don't have the forces to guard all the avenues of approach and it would be really cool if I could channel all the WP forces to a single thrusting finger. I'm not sure I can do that.

Here's a list of the battles that Mike instigated. There's several battles that evaporated my defenders on the spot. I need larger stacks.

Here's what I ultimately decided to do to respond to Mike's latest moves. I'm still putting units in front of him in an attempt to slow down the flow of Soviet units to the SE. My guess is that Mike will attempt to outflank me next.

Mike has blasted a hole in my screen and has driven some units through it and there are no Allied units available to contain them. I'm not sure what to do about this situation. Pull back and get organized again maybe?

Here's what I decided to do. Unfortunately, this leaves a hole in the lines still and the path forward for the Soviets is clear and there's no more reinforcements until T7. This may be the beginning of the end.
