Is this game supported still ?

Piercing Fortress Europa is a new game from veteran game designer Frank Hunter, which covers the campaigns of the Western Allies from July, 1943 through the end of April, 1945 in Sicily and Italy. Each area has its own map and time scale to best represent the campaigns for Sicily and Italy and the player is offered complete freedom, limited only by a historical order of battle and logistics model, to plan his operations and explore all of the many “what ifs” that the Italian theater has to offer.

Is this game supported still ?

Post by KarlXII »

I am out for a new wargame and did a deep-scanning of this game which seems good and got some good reviews when it was released but has the game been updated since ? Has the interface or AI improved ? And what about the manual that was about to be updated ?

The price seems a bit high for a game that seems to have very little activity in the forum except from Rasputiza.

The game has been updated to v1.04 and has the 'Chemkid' map and counter mod available. 'What's New' file attached.

There has not been an update for some time, but the game operates reasonably well. There are some problems, described in the discussion on this forum, but there are work-arounds, or house rules to deal with these.

Cannot say if there is going to be any more development, but there are folders in the game files for more scenarios and Frank Hunter does sometimes drop in an unexpected update for his games. I suppose it depends on the interest shown in the game.

However, the 'Chemkid' mods transform the look of the game and are a big improvement on the stock graphics.

Being a WEGO game, it does have a different playing style to most other titles, with much more uncertainty and FOW effects. There is a great reliance on supply availability and management, which is correct for the Italian Front.

As for the AI, this is always going to have limitations, but can be made more challenging with the use of house rules to add some realistic limitation to the players' options.

I hope the forum posts will give an indication how the game operates and some of the effects. [:)]

Thanks for quick reply !

Is the withdraw bug fixed as you mentioned in one of your reports when you cancel that mode ?
I would definetely buy this game if it was at sale.

One other Frank Hunter offering is 'Campaigns on the Danube 1805/1809', now in v3.05, also benefiting greatly from another 'Chemkid' Map and Counter mod.

Good FOW options and a good command system, working through subordinate commanders, with an historic orders time delay

See examples of play here :

The 'withdraw' bug is still in the latest version, but the work-around is not to select withdraw unless to really intend to use that option.

As a commander, don't discuss withdrawal unless you really mean it, as it discourages the men and they will retreat anyway. [:)]
