What is your Wargame/Strategy game of 2012

Post by TundraToad »

Hello

Just wondering what is your wargame/strategy game of 2012, software or boardgame. Mine is Commander, The Great War. I am loving this game, I can't believe the tension I feel every turn, Bravo!

My runner up was the boardgame Europe Engulfed, it was released a few years ago but this year was the 1st time I got to play it. The game is long but I got two campaigns in.

What is yours?

There are a few things coming out of the woodwork with Commander The Great War - but nothing that can't be fixed with a few house rules, and in the meantime the developers are working at further fixes and improvements. Those niggles aside, the game is stable, fun, challenging and incredibly addictive. Lordz have done an excellent job and I can't see myself playing anything else for a good while.

The only caveat to that is if Matrix World In Flames shows its face finally. MWIF is the biggy, the Holy Grail, the Mother of All Games. Whether that is 2013 or beyond who knows, but thanks to CTGW I have something that has dragged me away from Civilisation IV at last.

Achtung Panzer Op Star and all it's DLC (with it's constant feature rich updates it's like a new game each patch)
CMBN version 2
Bloody April Air War over Arras (boardgame)
Decisive Campaigns Case Blue (not sure it was released this year though. It's still very indepth I find but more manageable than GGWITE).
Squad Battles First World War (though I really need to mod it as it looks worse than any other SB game to me).

For me personally 2012 was a quite year wargame new release wise. I'm hoping 2013 will be a big year though. Slitherine group I'm interested in Command Modern Air\Naval warfare, Command Ops Legends of the Blitzkrieg, Command Ops Chir River (have serious doubts they will arrive next year though)and Command Ops COTA expansion.

Other games not from Slitherine group CM East front and CM Shock Force 2 and Graviteam tactics Mius front and any DLC, Les Grognards 2 and finally Wings Over Flanders Fields.

I'm also hoping to see some surprises next year aswell, maybe a new Steel Panthers, or even the release of Lock N Load Stalingrad!!!!!

It is difficult for me to select just one, but I will.

DC:Case Blue. I have played it more than any game in a long time, from beta to final release it had me hooked.

Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue would be my #1 Hands down
JTS Panzer Campaigns Moscow '42 would be tied with JTS Squad Battles World War 1 would be tied for second.
Kind Regards,

Only bought three wargames this year, and two of those were published last year. As I certainly wouldn't go declaring Naval War Arctic Circle game of the week let alone GOTY, I'll pass on wargame of the year. Best strategy game for me was Crusader Kings 2. Best game of any sort, Dishonored.

Great choice fodder. CtGW is one helluva game.

I'd agree on DB:CB. Especially with the powerful editor.

I find the mention of JTS Panzer Campaigns Moscow '42 interesting. I have held off, as I have so many PzC games already.

Was AB released this year? Anyway, a bit more work and Matrix could sell it for $30. I hope support for that game continues. Thanks!

Finally purchased WitpAE thanks to the sale and it's already proving to be a game that'll last a long time.
Also Scourge of war has turned out to be a surprise for me. Not sure how I missed those games until now.
And of course there's APOS and the DLC for it.

Funny enough, I don't think any are 2012 releases though.

Here's hoping FPG2 and Command will arrive soon and deliver as well.
