Cherry Poppin' Torpedoes, Scenario 1 - Turn 1200

Post by guytipton41 »

Hi Folks,

Stock Scenario 1, PDU off, one days turns.

This is an AAR between two cherries. Mark is running the Japanese and I'm running the Allies. Other than an AI game that lasted to 1943 (me) or mid-1942 (Mark) we have no idea what we are doing... as will no doubt become clear - at least on my part. I copied this AAR format from zuluhour - thanx. I'm going with weekly game turns to catch up with where we are now.

House rules: KB strikes PH and runs away for a day or two. No Japanese landings where the presence of Japanese transports would have been a casus belli and imperiled the PH task force. Force 'Z' not required to sortie. Other rules to be adopted as required.

Pre-war Allied planning:

China: We decide to play a quiet China since Mark's game turns are running four to six hours. Minor repositioning for garrison allowed and one Chinese corp tapped for Burma.

Malaya: Based on playing the AI I elect to rush everything back to Singers post haste. As many units as possible will be evacuated to Java and a Fortress Palembang will be created.

Burma: Give up everything south of Katha(!).

India: Build up Akyab, Chittagong and Cox's Harbor. Keep 2 DIV equivalent in Madras and Calcutta.

Philippines: Again, based on playing the AI I will pull all my forces back to Manilla and Clark Field. Get the planes out.

DEI: Again again (in several cases assuming that the a PBEM opponent will play like the AI does not in fact lead to the optimum outcome) I'll try to build up forts in Ambon, Koepang and Kendari. Planning to hold until mid-42.

SwPac-SoPac: Rush everything possible to New Caledonia and New Hebrides, here is where my main counter attack will start from.

Dec 7-13, 1941

Air war: In Malaya on 12/7 the Brits try the 1st of several attempts to mess with the invasion fleets. As will be all to common we lose a couple of a/c to no affect. To me this shows a requirment for mass to have any effect.

IJN SS I-10 wifs on unescorted xAK near Suva on 12/8!

China: Hong Kong falls 12/13. Most of the ships get away except for one unfortunate transport fleet that flees into the arms of CA Maya and Ashigara.

Malaya: Mark's landings in Singora, Patani and Kota Bharu go off like clock work. Kota Bharu falls 12/13.

Philippines: Batan Is falls 12/7, Aparri and Vigan fall 12/10, Tuguegaro on 12/12 and Legaspi on 12/13. The MGBs out of Hong Kong tangle with the Aparri invasion fleet and find themselves somewhat under gunned.

Hi Folks,

I'm doing my AAR in Thunderbird and copying it into the forum engine. The tabs are disappearing, got any idea how to get around this?

Cheers,

Put everything with tabs between code and /code tags. The tags need to be in [ ]
You should get something like this:

Code: Select all

line 1 data more data and still some more

I think that the two obligations you have are to be good at what you do and then to pass on your knowledge to a younger person

Dec 14-20, 1941

AIR WAR: The IJA makes a couple of strikes on Clark Field and then suspends operations, I suppose until closer airfields can be developed. The Nates weren't doing too well agains the P40Es. We had first blood for the Swordfish on 12/20:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on TF, near Kuching at 58,88

Weather in hex: Heavy rain

Raid spotted at 27 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 17 minutes

Allied aircraft
Swordfish I x 5
B-339D x 2

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAK India Maru, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Hakaze

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Swordfish I bombing from 5000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 500 lb GP Bomb

SURFACE WAR: Pretty quiet. I am running hard, but should be looking for opportunities to strike back at Japanese invasions.

SUB WAR: 12/14 was a busy day for the subs and then crickets for the rest of the week until one of the Dutch SS gets a TK.

On 12/14 SS Stingray shells an xAKL and SS Porpoise puts a fish into a xAKL, both near Kompong Trach.

IJN SS I-123 nails a xAKL near Tawau and then shells another xAKL, SS I-166 nails the CM Prins van Oranje near Donggala and SS I-23 nails the AM Turkey off Kona.

****** SS I-17 launches a 6 torpedo spread at CV Saratoga as she comes into PH on 12/14. Luckily no hits. ******
Is the Sara programmed to be a torpedo magnet?

On 12/18 SS KXVII broke the drought and put a fish into TK Kyokuyo Maru off Quinhon.

MALAYA: The Japanese captured Alor Star on 12/17. At Alor Star the three IJA regiments attacking stomp the two defending brigades. The Commonwealth units are moving to their blocking positions.

DEI: The Japanese captured Kudat on 12/16, Brunei on 12/17, Ternate and Kuching on 8/20. I would work to try to get the British base forces out of Borneo however they eventually withered away as the Japanese advance rushed past them.

PHILIPPINES:
The Japanese captured Mauban, Davao and Balabac on 12/16, Jolo and Laoag on 12/17.

SOPAC and SWPAC: Air and sea transports are moving forces from Rabaul and north PNG back to Port Moresby.

Wake Is falls to Maizuru 2nd SNFL on 12/14 after the defenders are softened up by BB Kirishima and Hiei. In addition the Japanese captured Vanimo and Hollandia on 12/14, Wewak on 12/15, Kavieng on 12/16, Aitape on 12/17, Shortlands on 12/18 and Tulagi and Manus on 12/19.

The situation in Singers on 1/21/42. Almost everything that can be bought out is gone. It makes more sense to try to hold out somewhere the IJA has to get on a boat to come visit.

DEI: Again again (in several cases assuming that the a PBEM opponent will play like the AI does not in fact lead to the optimum outcome) I'll try to build up forts in Ambon, Koepang and Kendari. Planning to hold until mid-42. [quote]

#1. If you mean holding parts of the DEI til mid 42, that is a reasonable goal. If you mean holding Ambon, Koepang, and Kendari until then...usually at least two of the three of them are gone by the end of February (or sooner - you're opponent isn't pushing things fast here so far.)

#2. Have fun with the PBEM! A lot more interesting and unpredictable (and frustrating, sometimes) than play vs the AI, but absolutely worth it. Good luck!

US CVs: Hiding behind Noumea.

AIR WAR:

On 1/23 the IJN starts night bombing Cairns, after a few months of this (including my night bombing in Burma) we decide to not night bomb to cut down the length of the combat replay.

Japanese Ships

On 1/24 SS I-165 gets a HDML near Tandjoengpinang.

On 1/25 the long dry spell for the allies is broken by SS KIX who nails the AO Erimo near Makassar.

On 1/26 IJN SS I-17 takes a coupe of hits off Brisbane, SS I-173 gets a YP on ASW patrol off PH and then SS I-9 get another one off the Channel Is. And then...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 26, 42 - The Nevada was headed to the West Coast with inadequate escort. The damage was around 60/65/13 but she would crawl to SF.

On 1/27 SS Seawolf gets beat-up by a wimpy PB off Hong Kong. Then the US gets something (finally) as the SS Narwhal pumps 14 shell into a xAKL near Ebadon. IJN SS I-8 gets another YP off PH. Then a British ASW TF off Batavia gets lucky:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Batavia at 49,97

Japanese Ships
SS RO-33, hits 25, and is sunk

Allied Ships
DD Electra
DD Jupiter
DD Encounter

SS RO-33 is located by DD Electra
RO-33 bottoming out ....
DD Jupiter fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Jupiter attacking submerged sub ....
SS RO-33 forced to surface!
...
Sub slips beneath the waves

On 1/28 The same ASW TF tries to duplicate their success and puts 7 hits on IJN SS I-159. A convoy off Ft Ord claims 7 hits on SS I-7. The IJN strikes back by sinking the DMS Long off Hilo.

MALAYA: Malacca falls to three recon regiments on 1/23. 1st Malay BN is speed bumped at Johore Bahru on 1/24 and Tandjoengpinang is invaded by the 1st Raiding Rgmt. Sabang falls 1/27.

BURMA: An almost undefended Moulmein falls 1/27. Pegu falls to (I think) an airborne attack the same day.

All the troops in Burma have pulled back to the Jungle line. This is because in game against the AI in hard mode the IJA just treated the defenders like red headed step children. Burma will fall to a couple of recon units because of this colossal error.

DEI: Balikpapan falls 1/22, Kolaka on 1/23. 1/24 is Boela's turn. Dili and Dobo fall on 1/25. Samarinda falls 1/26. Taberfane falls on 1/27.

PHILIPPINES: The airforce is gone and aerial bombardment of Clark and Manila is in full swing. On 1/28 after lots of softening up a decent sized stack pushes the allies out of Cagayan.

This shows that all the Burma based units have run off to Katha before the 1st Japanese unit steps foot in the country. Awesome fighting spirit - Wellington would be impressed.

As you can see here Noumea is not well held at this point in time. However reinforcements are on the way... as long as the KB isn't.

Feb 5 - Feb 11, 1942

Overall pretty slow going here. The Imperial forces are taking the islands of NEI, finishing off Malaya and exploiting into an empty Burma.

KB: Supporting the invasion of PM and Cookstown. Soryu and Hiryu are operating with the mini-KB supporting the invasion of Ambon and DEI in general.

US CVs: Hiding behind Noumea.

AIR WAR:

US CV forces show their hand with a pointless bombing of the small invasion force at Luganville on 2/6. I'm not planning on counter invading at this time, so this was just frustration.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally the Blens operating out of Madioen sting the IJN a little. What I'm hoping is that these pinpricks will force my opponent to use overwhelming force in the NEI and allow me to build up the bases in SWPAC.

MALAYA: Singapore falls with 6434 casualties on 2/6,

DEI: Bandjermasin falls on 2/5, Babar on 2/9, after a 10 day siege Koepang falls on 2/10. Madjene falls on 2/10 as well. PHILIPPINES: Aerial softening of the Manila and Clark forces continues. Surigao falls on 2/9. On 2/10 Manila falls to assault with heavy causalities. Trying to determine why the units didn't retreat to Clark - it seems that a IJA recon unit went from Clark to Manila and changed the ownership of the hex side... didn't have the food for them at Clark any way.

This is what happened to the poor 4th AUS BDE on 2/8/42 when they tried to recon Cooktown by fire. I'm pretty shocked at how badly this went.

The strategic situation around Java in mid-Feb 42

The forces from Malay are all digging in around Java with a strong force holding Osthaven and Palembang. As can be seen the Japanese decide to eat the snake from the tail. I don't have a good read on the KB and have assumed that it went home to prep for the victory parade. The major problem is immediately obvious - only 70 fighters and most are Buffaloes. Allied SCTFs have been gathering in and running away for the last month, depending on my fear level. Their goal is nab a invasion TF that wanders away from the shepherds.

When the Eastern Fleet realized that the Indomitable and Hermes had run into a major invasion the conclusion was that IJN carriers must be near. Sir James Somerville made the call that the Hermes be left behind while the rest of TF204 ran hard. HMS Hermes beaches at Padang the morning of 2/22. A couple of hours later the Nells from Singapore find her. The Indomitable is running hard north-west but Betties and Nells find TF204 that afternoon.

On the morning of 2/24 18 Vals will get 13 bomb hits on the crippled Indomitable, that after noon 15 Vals will get 6 more bomb hits. So HQ was correct, the KB was nearby.

[My opponent said that a refueling snafu delayed the KB which should have been in the area two day earlier. Would I have spotted them in time to turn TF204 around?]

Feb 19 - Feb 25, 1942

KB: Unknown at the beginning of the week. Soryu and Hiryu are operating with the mini-KB supporting the invasion of DEI in general.

US CVs: Operating along the supply line between Christmas Is and Noumea.

AIR WAR: A small raid [3 Zeros, 5 Vals] from Cooktown sneaks into Cairns on 2/22 and hits the CM Oglala. The Oglala was trying to lay a minefield to slow down the local Tokyo Express.

SURFACE WAR: All sorts of ships start showing up at Broome and they get scared off by my AMc flotilla. For example on 2/20. Then some DDs came in and sunk the AMc and the invasion was on.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Broome at 62,126, Range 12,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CS Mizuho
DD Hatsukaze
DD Wakaba
DMS W-5
DMS W-7
DMS W-8
xAK Azuma Maru
AMC Kongo Maru
xAK Myoko Maru

Allied Ships
AMc Slamat
AMc Djember
AMc Djombang

Reduced sighting due to 25% moonlight
Maximum visibility in Partly Cloudy Conditions and 25% moonlight: 11,000 yards
Range increases to 12,000 yards...
Range increases to 12,000 yards...
Both Task Forces evade combat

SUB WAR:
On 2/20 IJN SS I-121 bags a xAKL off Koggala.

A long dry spell for the US sub force might be broken when the SS Silversides shells a xAK near Kanoya on 2/21. To even the scales IJN SS I-3 puts a fish into AM Oriole and SS I-168 puts three into a xAK - both near PH.

On 2/22 IJN SS I-23 bags an escorted and loaded xAP off Kona (it was just engineers - not real people). SS Silversides shells another xAKL off Tanegashima.

On 2/24 SS Porpoise nails TK Kuroshio Maru near Cam Ranh Bay. IJN SS I-28 gets chased near the Channel IS.

BURMA: Magwe falls on 2/21.

DEI: Loemadjang falls on 2/20, Watampone on 2/22, Endeh, Siberoet, Benkoelen and Sinabang on 2/23, Tjepoe - defended by the 48th Gurkha - falls to a 4 regiment assault on 2/25. Probolinggo fall on 2/25 as well.

PHILIPPINES: Zamboanga falls on 2/24.

SOPAC and SWPAC:

AUSTRALIA: On 2/20 the Japanese invade Normanton and take Broome. It looks like North Australia (at least) is one of the strategic goals of the Imperial forces.

Feb 26 - Mar 4, 1942

Overall a very quiet week. The sub war is dying down because allied shipping is all convoyed and US subs are redeploying to the Coral Sea. Until US torpedoes get better the best role for US subs is 'eyes and ears' of the fleet.

KB: Operating in the IO in support of Java, Sumatra and West Australia operations.

Allied CVs: Escorting convoys to Noumea and nearby locations. UK CVs are staying well away from the KB.

AIR WAR: Lots of bombing by both sides in DEI, the ABDA airforce is wearing away. US heavies are bombing Cooktown and Normanton looking for some sort of significant result.

SURFACE WAR: The IJN is operating in support of invasions in Java, Sumatra and WA. All allied SCTF have run away - far away.

SUB WAR:

On 2/26 SS Finback shells a xAK off Saishu. An ASW TF rattles IJN SS I-3 off PH.

On 2/27 IJN SS RO-68 puts two fish into ACM Trapper and then gets beaten up a bit by the escort. SS Grayback shells a xAKL off Tanegashima then finishes it off with two torpedoes and SS Finback shells a xAKL off Shanghai.

On 2/28 SS Searaven torpedoes a xAKL near Tanegashima and SS Gato shells a xAKL near Fukue-jima.

On 3/1 SS Silversides shells a xAKL near Kanoya.

On 3/4 SS Salmon puts a torpedo into DMS W-11.

BURMA: A little back and forth bombing to no particular effect.

DEI: Probolinggo falls to the IJA 38th ID on 2/28. Dutch unit are pushed back from Benkoelen on 3/1. Samarinda falls on 3/3. Christmas IS IO is invaded on 3/4 but it's an even fight.

PHILIPPINES: The lone P-35A is still flying from Clark Field and shooting down a bomber every once in a while. However the IJA bombers are pushing the supply level down to zero. How long will Clark hold?

SOPAC and SWPAC: Build ups at Noumea, Efate, Suva and Pago Pago are well underway.

AUSTRALIA: On 2/26 Normanton falls to a 2+ regiment attack and Derby falls to the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF. Port Hedland comes under air attack on 2/28 and three short legged AMc are sunk. Port Hedland falls to the Yokosuka 2nd SNLF on 3/2.

DEI is being taken apart faster than I thought possible.

KB: Operating in the IO in support of Java, Sumatra and West Australia operations.

Allied CVs: Escorting convoys to Noumea and nearby locations. UK CVs are staying well away from the KB.

AIR WAR: The allies try to defend Cairns with a jumble of low quality fighters, the following was one days (3/9) carnage.

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 13

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 29
F4F-3A Wildcat x 8
F4F-3 Wildcat x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 8 destroyed
----------------------------------------
Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 13

Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 14
F4F-3A Wildcat x 8
F4F-3 Wildcat x 7

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 3 destroyed
F4F-3A Wildcat: 1 destroyed
F4F-3 Wildcat: 2 destroyed

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 4
----------------------------------------
Allied aircraft
P-39D Airacobra x 7
F4F-3A Wildcat x 2
F4F-3 Wildcat x 2

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 2 destroyed
F4F-3A Wildcat: 1 destroyed

Overall that 17:1 kill ratio in favor of the IJN. No doubt these are elite aviators. The lesson is not to commit before training, you just lose the planes and quite few of the pilots.

SURFACE WAR: Japanese raiders start cutting the supply line from CT to Perth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Time Surface Combat, near Perth at 33,147, Range 17,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
AMC Kongo Maru, Shell hits 2

Allied Ships
xAK Edward Luckenbach, Shell hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
xAK Clan Cameron
xAK Empire Condor
xAK Empire Curlew
xAK Empire Peregrine
xAK Bengalen, Shell hits 1
xAK Nicholas van Vonn
xAK Toendjoek, Shell hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Time Surface Combat, near Busselton at 35,150, Range 20,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
AMC Kongo Maru

Allied Ships
PG Tulsa
AO TAN 1
AO TAN 3
AO TAN 6

SUB WAR:

After the longest dry spell so far the SS Swordfish gets DD Hakaze near Mergui on 3/11.

BURMA:

DEI: The ever victorious IJA 38th ID gets to Loemadjang on 3/5 and bounces. The defending units: 55th British Brigade, SSVF Brigade, 46th Indian Brigade, 28th Gurkha Brigade, Soerabaja Base Force, 2nd HK&S Heavy AA Regiment, 1st KNIL AA Battalion, Loemafjang Base Force and 22nd Indian Mountain Gun Regiment. Most of these should have died at Singapore but got an additional two months of life. Madioen falls this day as does Waingapoe.

On 3/8 Loemadjang falls as the allies fail several rolls and defend at 25%. Lahat falls to the Imperial Guard Div and Mataram as well.

On 3/10 Christmas Is IO falls after the Japanese bring more troops and shell and bomb the defenders.

On 3/11 Djambi falls (this place is really nowhere). The Coco Is fall as well.

PHILIPPINES: On 3/9 the IJA takes another swing at Clark Field:

Japanese ground losses:
6850 casualties reported
Squads: 194 destroyed, 233 disabled
Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 56 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 53 disabled
Guns lost 74 (23 destroyed, 51 disabled)
Vehicles lost 38 (9 destroyed, 29 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1564 casualties reported
Squads: 7 destroyed, 185 disabled
Non Combat: 6 destroyed, 74 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 54 disabled
Guns lost 57 (3 destroyed, 54 disabled)
Vehicles lost 33 (5 destroyed, 28 disabled)

With supply I'd do this all year long.

Cebu falls on 3/10 after a two week long siege.

Palembang falls to force majeure. The last aircraft at Clark Field are disbanded, at this point in time this P-35A unit is the most experienced allied fighter unit on the board.

KB: Operating in the IO in support of Java, Sumatra and West Australia operations. Don't know if this the KB or the Mini-KB, could be the mKB by number of a/c flown. On 3/18.

Praboemoelih falls 3/13 but Palembang isn't totally encircled.

Ketapang falls on 3/14 and it's the last base on Borneo - except for that dot upstream of Pontianak - which is where the survivor start hiking.

On 3/15 the IJA assaults Palembang and reduce the fort level to zero. The raw AV was 852 vs. 289.

On 3/17 Palambang falls to assault. The defenders retreat into the swamps to the south-west. Bandjermasin falls as well.

PHILIPPINES: The IJA takes a swing at Clark Field on 3/15 and reduces the fortifications to zero. Supply has run out so the end is near.

SOPAC and SWPAC:

AUSTRALIA: Corunna Downs falls 3/12. Nookanbah gets run over on 3/14.
