WTF to to do???

Post by koontz »

this isnt the first time more like my 3ed or fourth time![:@][:@][:@]

just recived this
Game over. Had dozens of bombers on naval attack in the area, several surface attack groups, and had both your suicide groups spotted. Yet they managed to get through all that without even being attacked. This game sucks too much to play.

I'd suggest finding a veteran PBEM opponent who is not going to pick up his toys and go home when he get's mad. [8|]

Sorry you have had a bad run of opponents. It's a long term relationship, so maybe try to start a game with someone you are a bit familiar with.

Guess I'm missing the question here .... that the Dauntless and 3 Dutch DD's cream (relatively) unescorted convoys?  Good play in your sending those units in.  My condolences to your opponent.

First rule of any invasion force is to secure the area concerned.  If your units were spotted, then the invasion could have been pulled back for a day or two until your units were annihilated.  He took a big gamble with some expensive units and lost.

Not saying I might not have done the same thing, my opponent knows I've made more than a few bone-head mistakes much to his delight.  When I do, I don't blame the game though ... I made the decision.  [X(]

I was actually quite impressed with the feistness of the Dauntless. I know that the Allied players generally take an awful beating in the first year of the war and many probably get turned off by that (kind of how it really was actually during the war). Not to mention those vocal few that actually think the Allies could defeat Japan before 1942. [:D]

Hang in there. I went through a couple of early games myself and managed to get into what I believe will be a good long term game. We're into June 1942 now and I know it is just a matter of time before the tables slowly turn. [8D]

Koontz,

+1 on allied performace being especially poor in the first months of the war. Let me emphasize that again...allied units, especially in DEI are vastly inferior in effectiveness if not in numbers. This does not mean they dont have one or two good attacks in them. CA's versus AMC and PB's is going to be a predictable outcome every time. Actually, that outcome seems pretty favorable to the Empire relative to what could have happened.

As a tip, always have your invasion convoys follow a surface escort with a react of 1 or 2. Roaming escorts are relatively speaking ineffective. IMO not necessary to lag hexes, but definately follow. It will be highly likely the escort TF will engage first, unless the enemy achieves surprise (in which case you need to hold on to your lug nuts becasue the ride will be ugly).

Every time I see someone point out that their PBEM partner quits within the first 6 months because of an unsatisfactory outcome, I am frustrated that no names are identified. How else is a potential PBEM player to know who are the unrealiable PBEM players to avoid if identification is not provided? There are too few known forum players, who are fully occupied with their own game schedule anyway, to merely rely upon that source for a new PBEM partner.

Alfred, can I suggest you ask the original poster in a PM?  I think I would not want to be known as a person who talks bad about individuals, and maybe that is why the opponent's name was not specifically mentioned.  A PM allows you to find out who to avoid starting a game with, while not having things degenerate into a mud slinging contest on the forums.  [:)]

Also, for big invasion convoys, include a CA or two and at least one CL in the invasion TF so that "if all else fails" there will be protection. The old 18 kt IJN CLs are good for this duty.

Good point, I hadn't thought about PM as I am rather loathe to just arrive unannounced and unknown via a PM.

Notwithstanding the validity of your observation, isn't there some merit in identifying the serial quitters to avoid the too common angst they regularly generate.

Good points, Alfred and Mike. I think savy veteran forumites get a 'feel' for sketchy PBEM partners even if nothing else is posted slandering this person's behavior. Key warning signs:

1. The opponent has 32 different games running. None of which have progressed past the first month.
2. The opponent has a total of 25 forum posts over 4 years of registration. All of which are asking for 'fresh meat' on the opponent's wanted forum.
3. Wanton insults about others' strategic capabilities, general intelligence, ethnic origin, or particular amino acid sequence on a particular gene.

this isnt the first time more like my 3ed or fourth time![:@][:@][:@]

just recived this
Game over. Had dozens of bombers on naval attack in the area, several surface attack groups, and had both your suicide groups spotted. Yet they managed to get through all that without even being attacked. This game sucks too much to play.

I understand your opponent's feelings (my Japanese opponent is still doing this to me once in a while in 1944), but can any rational human being really expect everything to work perfectly for 1600 turns? "Stuff" happens! And as several have pointed out, it happens more frequently to unprotected convoys.

There are things that aren't perfect in AE (nerfed Allied skip bombing, over-rated and overly effective Japanese ASW, Jap torpedo planes that drop laser guided bombs in "level mode" from 9,000 feet, etc), but that's why we have a forum to question and complain in.

This sounds more like the whining of a JFB who's "perfect plan" to win on VP's in 13 months just hit a setback due to bad luck and bad planning. You should probably be grateful that he quit now rather than bolting on Jan 2, 1943 when he didn't get his "auto-win". Great reason to hate VP's is they encourage this kind of play.

It is probably "bad form" to name this person on the forum..., but I do hope you will answer inquiries to prevent others from having to deal with such childishness...

Couldn't agree more. Have never played using VPs and never will.

Think its ok to surrender when all CVs and BBs are at bottom of the sea. But in
25th dec as japan?

And also alot easyier to blame your own misstakes on the game engine...

Gonna start an thread about reabile players now. [:)]

Kootz sorry to hear your PBEM opponent packed it in ...I am currently in a PBEM game; I consider myself lucky I've wargamed with him for 40 years. Its Mar 43 and we have both had horrible turns that could result in a lesser opponent surrendering.
I wish you luck in finding an honourable fow.

What to do? Try again is all you really can do. We've all had failures with PBEM opponents, and it can happen even when you've played him before successfully. One guy bailed on you, then bailed on me the next day, 3 weeks into the war, minimal losses on both sides at that point. I knew him from UV/WITP days, so he should have been a safe choice of opponent.

You also can't be afraid to try someone new (to you, not necessarily new to the game) either. Post count is meaningless as a way of choosing an opponent. My replacement opponent has I think 2 posts in 5 years, but the game has worked out really well. I think it will go the distance.

If you are starting up with an experienced PBEM player, I don't think there is anything wrong with asking for a reference or 2 to get a feel for reliability and play style. I didn't in this case, but have in the past.
