military impressions from malta...

Post by bigbaba »

hi all,

we visited malta this summer and since its a mostly unknown and not important little island for most people, although it has a richer military history then some entire countries, i would like to share what i found there with you:

the impressions are from a bunker complex deep under valetta which still exist as a museum.

thats a tribute to the brave RAF pilots who saved the island from the invasion between 1940-1942. most of the people do not know that valetta (the capitol of malta) was bombed often then london during WW 2.

Image

thats general eisenhowers room during his time on the island. also, general alexander, admiral cunningham and general montgomery were there are had their own rooms in the same floor.

Image

thats from a RAF fighter pilot who was fighting over malta during the war.

Image

the radio installation in the bunker.

Image

a painting of the HMS illustrious. this CV was damaged by german stukas and was in the harbor of valetta for emergency repairs before heading out of the mediteranian sea. she was attacked several times by german bombers during her time in valetta.

Image

the RN operation center in the bunker, where the ship movements in the mediteranian sea were evaluated.

Image

thats the RAF fighter control table (like the one from the movie battle of britain). from here, the air defence of malta was organized.

and that is only about WW 2. malta also has a old history about the attempts of muslims (arabs and turks) to occupy the island (thanks to god the maltese knights and people were able to resist) and also of napoleon who was able to occupy the island.

its amazeing what you can find about the worlds military history on such a little island.

You might like this : Conquest of the Aegean has 2 hypothetical Malta scenarios. One in which you can execute Operation Hercules, the original German plan to take the island and another one where as the Allies you try to recapture a German/Italo occupied Malta in 1943.

These scenarios have the whole island as a map and are simply a blast to play as you have time & opportunity for some fancy maneuvers.

Bigbaba:  Did you happen to get to the tunnels that were cut under Luqa Airdrome for and by the Axis POWs, they even had their names carved out of the sandstone and it went on for miles. I had to opportunity to be attached to RAF Luqa, with the USN, in the early 50's. Great duty station for Yanks. Valletta was still messed up (bombing) even then. In the Harbor was an intact Stuka, still armed with bombs. Did you see the surving bi-plane fighter in the museum across from Governors House ? Thanks for the fond memories. By the way, where you took the pictures, those sites were still fully functional in the 50's.
